terrible musical ending....spoilers

WTF. This film was really good until the german woman comes back and they put on this ridiculus cheesey musical magic show. I wanted to disappear under the sofa at that point. Should have ended 10 mins earlier. Real shame

I have to agree with that. I was enthralled with the film until the musical bit and I felt that was just a touch too cheesy and feelgood. It was almost like another film - as if they had given up with the earlier rather restrained and gentle film and gone for the big ending. I will watch t again in the hope of developing more sympathy with it but my initial reaction was much as yours - it was just a bit too much to swallow.

reply

Yep - you are right the musical ending really did not sit correctly in the film. Maybe if they had toned it down and just had a reasonably amateur magic show it would have worked better.

reply

I liked it the way it was, very entertaining, it was very cute.

I am really dissapointed with the ending too. I don't feel it worked for many reasons including, but not limited to, how the movie had enabled me to see a fat white german woman as beautiful, but the musical ending only made her ridiculous...

reply

Yeah, the musical thing was really stupid. I really think they could have left that out. They could have just had Jasmin come back, and have Rudi propose to her in her room and all that stuff, but have something better in between.

This morning, I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don't know.

I liked the musical number. The film was so off the wall that it played right in.
And I agree the ending would have been more serious and had more dramatic effect if it ended with her deportation.
In conclusion, Id go for either.

reply

I liked the ending and felt it fit in perfectly in it's own quirky way like the whole movie was...

I didn't hate it but I do think that it should have at least been toned down a bit, like the other "Magic!"-scenes.

Oh well, it's just a minor blemish on this otherwise perfect little movie.

reply

Totally agree, I adore this film, quirky, different; you can feel the sand being blown into your face, but the cheesy, camp ending is a disappointment.

reply

I loved it, all of it. Yes it was a very different kind of film, and I loved that too. Bagdad Cafe is one of my all-time favorite films.

I just watched this movie on instant NETFLIX -- and absolutely loved it.

I also found the final scenes (musical ending) surprising -- in the sense of being totally unexpected -- but definitely in a good way. The ending effectively boosted the over-all quirkiness of the story to an even higher level --rather like a parting gift, saved for last, for all of us.

I love this film but agree that the ending doesn't really fit.

I find it quite amusing, though, so treat it as the cast and crew just having a bit of fun - i.e. not really part of the main movie.

reply

The whole movie was quirky. The ending fit right in. :)

There isn't anything I dislike about this movie.

I loved the musical number. It was certainly VERY unexpected, but it was very cute.

It was disgusting.

And by the way I feel sorry for unintelligent people who can't tell good from bad. This wasn't a bad film, but too ride on that feeling of having seen something oh so "quirky", wow... You're not 17 years old anymore.

reply

"disgusting" seems a bit over the top to describe anything in this lovely, compassionate, at times silly, but always generous film.
