...what version do I get? I can choose between a 118 minute version, and a 268 minute version.

Though I read on Wiki that the director's cut is about 170 minutes long, so I don't know what the 268 min version is all about.

There's no 268 version at all, I don't know where it says that, maybe it was a DVD set that includes both versions and so combined the running time! In any case, would recommend you get one of the 'both version' sets.
