Press Release Brief: NEW VERSION PREMIERE'S OCTOBER 30TH IN VENICE CALIF

The Director's Cut of "A Night in the Life Of Jimmy Reardon" is basically a totally new movie, called "AREN'T YOU EVEN GONNA KISS ME GOODBYE".

This is the way Director William Richert and actor River Phoenix meant you to see this serious and somewhat dark drama of one critical night, a turning point, in one young man's world. In a special showing at the Sponto Gallery in Venice California, Thursday, October 30, 2003.

Even though River hated the released film I liked it. Hehe. I thought alot of it was funny and he was such a doll in it but I didn't like the ending. I wanted him and Lisa to do it. Damnit! Haha! Jimmy acts so much like my ex boyfriend. Lol. Ah hem..Anyway, I was surprised when I first watched it that he would even be in a movie like that. It's so unlike him but I suppose that's why they call it acting! But then again River didn't know it was going to be turned into what it was. I can't wait to get my copy of it.

That new version is nothing special. The original release was fine, and Phoenix narration is sorely missed, and that song played at the end of the newer version kills the whole project.

I only bought mine a couple of weeks ago and its the version with Rivers narration. I got mine from America. Thank god because i really didnt want the other version. I didnt even know there were two different versions until i came on here. Why wouldnt they have River do narration in the first place anyway? It makes no sense.

Do you know if the other versions available? Is it the U.K version or something? Not that i want it, i'm just wondering.

reply

Yes, i think the US version is better; it's basically the same film, but with alot of the music completely changed. The songs fit the mood and time of this story perfectly, and when I saw the UK version, the sad, sappy love song that played over the final scene, was a downer, instead of the upbeat feeling inspired from the song "Bass Drum." I think the song they use in the UK version is some soppy Johnny Mathis tune! As for the "alternate version," director William Richert, (who you might remember as the character 'Bob,' the crazy, bathrobe-wearing, Shakespeare-spouting "john" from the brilliant 'My Own Private Idaho' also with River Phoenix) explained that Jimmy Reardon was an autobiographical work. The original cut featured Richert doing the narration, suggesting an older guy recalling his early years, and telling the story. That version was rejected, because the studio thought that the younger audience wouldn't relate to an old guy as much as they could to teen star their own age. So that version was rejected, and Phoenix was brought back to record the narration. Believe me, it works alot better! The only thing that makes the Richert version valuable, is an extended scene of River getting his palm read and ending up in a brothel in the bad side of town. Remember the poem he recites after getting back to the party? "I've come from a den of pimps and whores..." In that alternate version, you actually see all that stuff. Btw, that version can only be purchased online, direct from william richert's website. I hope this answers your question; as you can see, i love this film..

Wow thanks for the info.
I don't understand why they'd make 2 different versions in the first place. Surely it would have made sense just to have River narrate from the start rather than William Richert, and why not put those extra scenes in the U.S version? Very strange.
I absolutely love this movie and I'm so glad to have the version with Rivers narration but being such a big River Phoenix fan I don't want to miss a second when its to do with River and I'd like to see the scenes from the other version that aren't on my dvd. I find that quite annoying.
Thanks again for all the info

Ah-ha!

That pimps and whores line always made me wonder if it was a misappropriated Alan Ginsberg poem. It sounds like something he would have written in the 60s.
