Muted line from Joyce Fickett

No one will answer my first attempt at this let me try a second time,
in the scene where Joyce and Jimmy seduce one another, why is it muted when she says to him, " Jimmy... I want to *beep* you." when she says the dirty part, anyone know why?

reply

Maybe because of the fact he was a minor at the time and perhaps that kind of dialogue from an adult to a minor was not legal in some states or something.

I've been wondering about this since I first saw it 10 years ago. Was it seriously released theatrically like this??

reply

Probably since even when they show it on television, it's still muted. it's the one flub-up in the movie.

I can't remember where I read or heard it, but William Richert said that Mama Phoenix was seriously opposed to that line and wanted it taken out, so Richert compromised to some degree and muted it. If I find the source again, I'll let you know.

"He argued his point; that the film was autobiographical and he had been in that exact situation was 16"

Hahahaha...as if it mattered even then, much less that 'history would demand it'.

The answer is in the trivia section.

I just heard this (or didn't hear it); never noticed it before.
The reason stated is so silly, considering everything else in the movie like Ann Magnuson getting in the shower with him and being on top of him. That was an odd way to censor in the editing room. Usually ADR would have been used.
