I Thought This Was Fun (said the Alice Fan)
I've always heard that this movie is supposed to be so dark and disturbing. I watched it last night and found it rather enjoyable, with most of the animation leaving me in awe and asking "How did they do that?"
Yes, it's trippy. No one's going to deny that. But in a funny/campy way. I actually showed my mom some of it. Now my mom is literally terrified of anything even remotely scary in film. She got scared during Kill Bill for crying out loud. And she thought the scene she saw (when the Queen asks Alice if she plays croquette) was delightful. The moment she saw it she remarked: "I love this!" Of course, she's always loved the Alice story, so she's biased.
And yes, the constant CU's of Alice's lips gets annoying after a while, but it does add a storybook feel to the movie, and I love Camilla Power's voice. Again, I found it campy and fun.
