Sleazy Tim

This guy was a total scum. I mean Kat was quite willing, but this guy should have known better!

And I am sure he's wife caught on when they came in the door and she saw how upset Kat was.

No doubt -- I am sure good ol' Tim used the sob story about his life and his wife, hoping some naive young girl will fall for it!

Wow this thread is old, but it seemed to me that Kat was the one pushing their relationship toward an affair. Of course, he should have put a stop to it, but he didn't initiate any of it until they kissed. It's just as much her fault as his.

How the *beep* was she pushing their relationship toward an affair? The dude was total scum. I'm glad she tore up that check.

She asked for wine and flirted with him on the balcony. She almost kissed him when he offered his sweater. She was giggly over him before he showed much interest in her. Yes he was a sleaze, but it wasn't all his fault.

I think she was very innocent and naive, and believed he was a good guy; that he would do the right thing. As intelligent as Kat was she was also very gullible thinking things could work out. But I don't think she was leading him on. If he had pushed her away or told her nothing would ever come of it. That would of been the end of it, but he never stopped it.

I see your point.

Agree that Kat was quite naive. I suppose it was like having a crush on a teacher. Yes, you get all giggly, try and pretty yourself up in the hope of being noticed, have a little girly fantasy that something would happen, but never actually expect it to or initiate it. Watching it, if he hadnt made a move, I dont think she ever would have. But once he did, she thought it meant a lot more and went along with it.

I love that line btw, 'why does it hurt so much?' Very simple line, delivered to perfection. Just sums up that first heartbreak and how it knocks you for six just how much it hurts. I dont think she ever realised just how much she wanted Tim until he made the move.

He wears a pink shirt! Didn't she know that's like the scarlet letter for guys? Lol.

He was scum and she was being flirty.

"Kat was the one pushing their relationship toward an affair"

BS. She was a naive 18 year old kid (nothing like her sister Daisy). He was what...30?

He made the first move, not her.

reply

I always thought that Tim really did care for her. He was wrong to act on it, but I think she reminded him of a different time in his life. Maybe he wished he had married a girl like Kat instead of his wife.

reply

She was young and naive and was hanging on his every word. He was totally flattered and enjoyed the attention. Kat was too young and “unfinished” yet to have any indication what kind of woman she will be once she has completed her education and gained some worldly experience.

Tim was a sleaze for taking advantage of her naïveté and inexperience. It seemed like he was envious of where she was in her life, and he sort of wanted to recapture his youth by fucking her. He even said that he envied where she was in her life, remembering what it was like for him when he entered Yale.

Kat was told at the very beginning that he was married, and she did go forward, pushing the relationship further. With a sister like she had, how could she possibly be so naive? I don't buy it. I had no sympathy for her.
And the role reversal with Bill and JoJo, where the guy wants to commit and refuses to have sex because she wouldn't commit, puleeze...maybe the Yuppie but not a strapping fisherman like Bill.
Unrealistically written, even for a movie.

I think we are forgetting that Kat was 18. It's not like she was 12 years old. She was an adult and knew exactly what the situation was and what she was doing. Tim was very honest about where he was in his life and also what he had missed out on.

Yes, he was wrong to kiss her and have the affair, but she was wrong as well.

To be honest, I don't even really cast blame on either one of them. They were just two people following their hearts... it happens.

He was everything she thought she wanted in a man, and she was everything he was missing in his life.

reply

He was more in the wrong given he was older and married with a child, but I cannot say he's total scum. I don't think he was just looking for an innocent, inexperienced high school girl to cheat on his wife with. I think he did care for her. In another life they could have had a relationship. Kat was inexperienced, but she was old enough to say no, but the first guy she really fell for was older and taken.

Clark's destiny = Superman, Lex Luthor & Lois Lane.

reply

Agreed 110%. Tim is TOTAL scum. Yes, Kat probably should have known better, but think back to when you were 18. Were you making state-of-the-art decisions back then, especially about sex and love? Tim was at least in his mid-30s and DEFINITELY should have known better.

What really seals it is that Tim brings Phoebe with him to the Mystic Pizza when he drops off the check for Kat (which, considering what just happened, is very goddamn awful in and of itself). With Phoebe there as cover, Kat can't lay into him like I'm sure she wanted to. He pretty much gets away with all of it.

I've seen this movie like 100x, from the time I was Kat's age till now in my 40's (eek). I have always gotten the impression Tim was playing her. It started little by little, he could see she was crushing on him when he brought Phoebe to the planetarium and she stumbled over her words as their eyes met. Kat was probably one of many!
