It's a shame...

That the real killer of Mary Phagan (Jim Conley I think his name was) was never brought to justice. What he did was unforgivable.

reply

Yes indeed. He admitted on his death bed to his family of killing her, but nothing official. Atlanta did pardon Frank just before the musical PARADE came out, but lot a good that did, the poor guy was just as much a victim as Mary Phagan. This is probably THE worst handled court case in US history.

Jim Conley was what could be termed a "waste of humanity". He was a lying, thieving, drunk. His reputation was already well-established at the time of the murder. Conley killed Mary Phagan then pinned the murder on his boss, Leo Frank, in order to save his own sorry ass. He claimed that Frank tried to come on to Mary and when she refused, he hit her hard enough to knock her unconscious. Then, Conley claimed that Frank ordered him to write the famous notes found at the scene. To top it off, Conley alleged that Frank, who was married, had other women frequently come to his office, and that Conley was paid to keep other people from going in. How the people of Atlanta believed his mountain of lies makes absolutely no sense.

Apparently they hated Jews and "outsiders" worse than blacks. I've posted before that had Leo Frank been a Christian, he would probably never have been suspected of this horrible crime.

Jim Conley did spend time in jail as an accessory. Within a year after the trial, the lawyer who represented Conley became convinced that his client was the actual murderer but nobody could convince people in Georgia that Leo Frank was innocent.

Jim the scum only spend just a year in Jail ?

It was more or less a year that Jim Conley spent in jail as an accessory. However, about 5 years after he was shot by a drugstore owner during a robbery attempt. He spent many years in prison for that. During the 1930's, the victim's family welcomed him into their home, although one of the girls when told who he was claimed he was the killer. It's amazing how he fooled the entire community. To this day, there are those who believe his claim that Leo Frank killed Mary Phagan.

reply

The Leo Frank case was a black eye for American justice and humanity in general

I know this is old but, when you said the victim's family did you mean Mary or some other people?
