I don't know, but I found this on the Guardian (UK) website (they have an interview with Carmen there):

Almodovar and Maura had what was obviously a bruising bust-up at the end of the 1980s. They are now friends again but have not worked together since.

At least, apparently, they are on talking terms.

I also found this on a Carmen Maura website:

- ¿Y no van a volver a trabajar juntos?

and from the Advocate:

One thing that his audiences have wanted to see over the last decade is a reunion between Almodovar and his original leading lady, Maura. And afar a long period of feuding between the two, he says they will probably work together again soon. "I can do it, and I think also she can do it, because we talk about that," he says. "For more than 10 years it was impossible for personal reasons. Even after we became friends again and started talking to each other, it was too difficult for her. But now, in the last few years, we've talked about it, and I'm looking for a character for her."

It looks like they'll be working together again!!!!

Carmen Maura got angry with Almodovar when she wasn't allowed to sit with him at the Oscars ceremony. Then, when he travelled Berlin he took a piece of The Wall and gave it to Carmen at the Goyas ceremony next year and he told her something like:

"I was in Berlin and I've brought to you this piece of wall and I wonder, if such a strong wall has been pulled down, why cannot we pull down that horrible wall that separates us?"

Then Carmen started to cry and they are barely-friends since then.

Whatever happened to them, they are working again on Volver (http://imdb.com/title/tt0441909/) so I'm so glad and happy!!

I also just watched ¡Átame! DVD (http://imdb.com/title/tt0101026/) and in that extra, Almodóvar and Antonio Banderas said they would work together again. It's good to see those actors that in Almodóvar films in 80s are working again with him.

For Carmen Maura, I just cannot wait to see Volver!! I still believe she's the best actress for him.

reply

Yeah, they're working together again in Almodovar's new film 'Volver'. Don't know what it's about, but I bet it would be better than the last ones. Almodovar's movies were definitely better when Carmen played them (well, that's my opinion...)

reply

I had to see if this actress was indeed the same who had played Pepe in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown when I saw her interviewed for Volver at Cannes. And it was! :D

reply

It all started with the shoot of Women on the verge...
Almodovar thought she wasnt good at all, and found it hard to get what he wanted from her. He told he she was ruining the movie etc...
Apparently the shooting was quite bad atmosphere-wise.

reply

It's so hard to believe that they weren't getting along because this movie is truly brilliant!!

reply

Maybe he was trying to drive her towards a nervous breakdown to get a realistic performance????

All generalities have exceptions, including this one.

was Lars von Trier the assistant director?

Who cares about stairs? The main thing is ice cream.

reply

JESUS! I can't believe that they were not getting along on set... especially since the work is really a masterpiece.

But yes, I've heard that Almodovar is quite the PERFECTIONIST. I can see him doing a scene a million times until he gets what he wants!!

reply

I was told, by a film professor, that instead of taking Maura, the lead for this film, to the award ceremony, he took his long time friend Bibi Anderson instead. I would have been miffed as well, but I hate to think of how many amazing performances we've missed with her absense.

reply

I realize I'm replying to a years-old thread, but the first thing that comes to mind about their split is the rift that happened between Toshiro Mifune and Akira Kurosawa, with the obvious "What if Mifune had done 'Ran' or 'Kagemusha'?" [With all due respect to Tatsuya Nakadai...I mean absolutely zero offense, as he was terrific. I just didn't sense that he had the rapport with Kurosawa that Mifune had.] Personalities happen, and that Berlin story is a great one, but I wonder if anybody approached Maura or Almodovar about that other rift and said "If you're going to collaborate again, you'd better do it while you still can."

reply

Let's be frank. Almodovar dropped Maura for a better model. Marisa Peredes has replaced Maura.
