Ugly women
Did anyone notice that all the women in this movie are ugly? As for the men, Banderas and some of the other guys are not so ugly. Is this a sign of misogyny?

I have always thought Pedro Almodovar makes his castings as if expecting women to enjoy the sight, rather than men. His actresses are all very "average". Carmen Maura used to be quite an attractive woman in her 20s, but in this film she is portrayed like a middle age, common looking, not too slim woman. Then Maria Barranco would be almost invisible in a Spanish street, and Rossy De Palma is downright ugly.

The standards of beauty do not deviate that much inside Western countries, today 2008, all of which are basically submitted to the same menu of movies, series, sitcoms and celebrities all along, from Paris Hilton to Maria Sharapova.

Pepa and her model friend were attractive.
Carlos' mom I'm sure was supposed to look like she did, for her age and her nutty character, what with the make-up and hair and crap.
But damn, Carlos' girlfriend? I wanted to cry or throw up, but I could not look away. I'm never one to recommend cosmetic surgery, but in this case I make an exception.

Carlos'gf or Rossy de Palma did have quite a striking face but it is so interesting to look at. i looks like a face that belongs to a Picasso painting which Rossy herself has said.
That's really mean. Carmen Maura and Maria Barranco are not ugly by any stretch of the imagination. Rossy de Palma could benefit from a drastic nose job but the rest of her face was fine.As someone else pointed out, she is rather striking in her own unique way. Although i will grant you that the men were better looking than the women but I think that says more about Almodovar liking hunky men. Also, the feminist attorney was quite fetching as was her secretary. Oh1! and Ana Leza who was Mrs. Antonio Banderas at the time is also very attractive and definitely prettier than the second Mrs. Banderas, Melanie Griffith - now there's one that fell out of the ugly tree!
shareI've seen Carmen Maura's movies when she was in her 20's, Let me tell you that she was very hot back then.
IMO María Barranco (Candela) is quite pretty and has a nice body.
Julieta Serrano (Lucía) is a women in her 50's and she looks fine for her age.
Rossy de Palma might have a gigantic nose, but she got a very hot body.
Anyway Beauty is on the eye of the beholder, hence, each to his own.
Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons.
Pedro was drawn to Rossy de Palma because of her looks and one of his friends Esther Garcia has said that he kept her around because he loved looking at her. He found her stunningly beautiful. It doesn't hurt that she's also a great actress, check her out in "La flor de mi secreto". She's amazing in that one.
