John Nichols, who wrote the novel, was definately not a local. He might be representing himself in the college guy from NYU - Herbie Platt, played by Daniel Stern. I believe that Nichols actually did something similar by traveling around the country staying with people to study thier social lives and found Northern New Mexico so , what, different, special, whatever, that he wrote the novel. Redford only made it into a picture.
