A few questions about the scenes in this movie.

Why did the old man (i forget his name) shoot at Joe and the guys when he came back to Joe's place after jumping from the bulldozer? Did he think they were Devine's men? Did he not hear the other guys yelling DON'T SHOOT!! DON'T SHOOT!! And why did the guys tell Joe to run away? The old man shot at him like 2 or 3 times before he fired back. The shooting was entirely in self-defense. What was he worried about?

Also, what was the deal with the rock throwing woman - just comic relief?

It is probably too late to answer this question for you but....
Amarante,(the 0ld Man)shot at Joe because Joe shot his pig, Lupita. They told him to run away because they knew that Devine and his crew were looking for a way to get rid of Joe and that this would be a perfect excuse to send him to prison or kill him. The state policeman, Montana, may have meant to kill him when he caught him on the mountain. Shorty saved his life most probably.

The old man's dead friend who he regulary chatted to, also Joe's Dad, told him he would have to make a sacrafice, just before this.

And he drove the machine that was wrecking Joe's bean field off the edge of a gorge, so he was definately on Joe's side.

i think he was just so upset when he saw Joe shoot his companion his pig.

I was much relieved to see the pig was okay apart from a bandage later on.

In the end though, my question is, was the old man Amarante Cordova still alive talking to his dead friend or was he a ghost at that point as well.

He was a ghost.

I think that woman was just comic relief. She was cool. LOL She had such a pretty smile when she saw the news articles floating through the air.
