The Duke had balls

For a white collar criminal, Jonathan sure had moxie. He was a pilot. He jumped off a cliff into a river. He closed the freight train door on Jack. He posed as the FBI agent at Redwood's bar to get some food money. He's one cool accountant!!!

Plus, I loved his dog, Heidi. LOL Beautiful dog and such a light, whimsical name for a killer dog!! LOL

He sure is but I think he got knocked into the river rather than jumped.

I read a book by Charles Grodin ("It Would Be So Nice if You Weren't Here") that said that was the most uncomfortable movie to shoot the whole entire time. He hated all of it, especially wearing a wetsuit under his clothes before that freezing river fiasco. He swore never to do another action movie like that ever again.

I need to check that book out from the library and read it. The title alone is hilarious!! That's interesting that he didn't enjoy filming this movie because it's one of my favorite Grodin movies ever.

i read his book as well. That was years ago though. while I recall that he hated shooting that scene in the water, I got the impression that he enjoyed making this movie. My memory isn't what it use to be though. I may have to read that book again
To me, this is one of my all time favorite Charles Grodin performances!

This is hands down my favorite movie of all time. I've watched this film over 30 times in my life. Most of the time turning my friends onto it by introducing it to them and watching it with them.

After numerous viewings of this excellent film,I've come to the conclusion that The Duke was so intelligent, that from the moment he met Jack Walsh he had a grand scheme to bug and annoy, while simultaneously be charming, Walsh with theclear vision and foresight that Walsh would inevitably let him go. He tugged on Jack Walsh's heart strings and played him like a musical instrument. This is made unequivocally clear at the end of the film when The Duke reveals that he actually had approx $300k of cash on him. Unbeknownst to us during the whole film, he actually held the proverbial Trump card the whole time.

So yes,he has elephant sized BALLS!!

reply

Don't forget the Duke offered to buy off Jack when they first met, and later even told Jack that he had money, which was so subtle that Jack missed it.

Promise me, no matter how hopeless things get, keep on trying, OK? Keep coming chin-up, OK?

That is what makes this movie re-watchable. Knowing what is going to happen.

In all fairness, he was thrown into the river by the arguably more badass Jack Walsh. 😁 But that's right, The Duke is a white collar criminal unlike any other. Not only did he wanted to do the right thing of course, but even though he unwillingly found himself in tough situations he wasn't prepared for, he managed to get out of them by playing it smart (except the time he tried to play the "I'm too scare to fly" game with Marvin and ended up getting his lights shut out haha). Overall, the Duke is one interesting character.
