Brilliant after first 25 mins

In my opinion, ignoring the slow, unbearably murky first 25 mins of this film Medea evolves into one of the great forgotten masterpieces of 80s cinematic art. Bearing in mind Medea was made for TV and sabotaged in post-production by von Trier himself it is astonishing how evocative and moving the long final sequences are. It is possible that the heavy grading and expressionistic sound mix bring an extra otherworldliness to the film.

i was gonna sell it on ebay, i couldnt get past the begining of it either. and i usually pride myself on getting thru boring flicks by brilliant directors. i'll give it another try. thanks for your post!

¿Do you have a link on Trier's sabotage or some interesting sites for further reading about Medea? I also thought it was great, and i didn't think the first 25 minutes, although not easy, where so harsh. In fact, the 1/3 of the film set up the tone of the film.

I think I read the ting about Sabotage in Trier on Von Trier (Faber).

Totally agreed! The first part almost made me sleep.. Than slowly the film turns into a cinematic marvel.

Brilliant from start to finish.

As pretentious as it sounds, everything Lars Von Trier basically touches turn into art-his own opinions on Medea should count zero. It's a wonderful film.

Glauce was arrestingly beautiful and Medea was just right. The foggy Nordic landscape was perfect and the music added to the atmosphere. This film has been praised by influential scholars everywhere in Europe as a movie where he successfully universilizes the myth of Medea.
