What's With the Weird Clothes and Hairdos?

Did you notice how excessive and extravagant are the clothes and hairdos of the Mafia wives? Even their mourning outfits at the funeral of Frank De Marco are tacky and in abominable taste.

Its 1988, of course its bad.

That's how they dressed back then

Damn!! My posts attract so many nutty B-A-S-T-A-R-D-S!

Even for the 80's, the fashions in this film seemed a bit tacky and over the top. Then again, having said that...Michelle Pfeifer still looks great with a dodgy haircut.

"I must not ilegaly download this movie!"

i was 16 then and we thought we looked GREAT. every magazine, cosmo, elle, people......this is how you were supposed to dress. big big big tidal wave hair, frosted lipstick, hideous patterns, bright colors, leggings, huge ass sweaters, little ankle boots, glow in the dark jewelry...and we thought we were HOT. i'm serious. look at magazines from 1982-1988 and this will make sense. it as absolutely the style. it will never make a comeback except as a sick joke. all of my high school friends and i just laugh and laugh at our prom pics. they are hideous. i don't even care if you were beautiful. the dresses, hair, makeup, jewelry is hideous. the 90's we slowly toned it down and now everyone looks boring.

The little black dress so favoured by people such as the quartet of SEX AND THE CITY isn't much of an improvement.

Flashback!

Also, what about all the dropped-waist dresses? Sometimes they even had a wide sash around the hips with a huge bow. That style makes anyone wearing it look like they're off to a grade school birthday party.

(Daryl Hannah's clothes in the movie Wall Street are a pretty appaling example of bad Eighties Wear!)

The fashions are supposed to be over the top. The hairstyles are mockeries of the fashions of the time. This is an ultimate satire.

I miss my big hair! I use to go through a can of hairspray a week!

What is wrong with all of you? The over the top hair and makeup have nothing to do with 1988, it has to do with the horrible over the top tacky fashion sense by those from Long Island and New Jersey. Same theme visited in Goodfellas. Remember Henry's wife saying how tacky the mob wives were? It's that only 1988. Now, it's SO over the top because it's a comedy so they exaggerate a tad bit for comedic purposes.

Sorry james. I think it's both time & place. I went to college in Baltimore in the mid-1980s. My school attracted a large number of young women from northern Jersey, NYC & the NY suburbs. They seemed to be interested in meeting guys from the area medical & law schools (think Johns Hopkins, Loyola, UMD) as well as the Naval Academy in Annapolis. At 3-4 hours away from home, they were close enough to go back for holidays, yet far enough that Mom & Dad had no clue what they were doing.

And yes, some of these girls went to class in full-blown hair & make-up. Waaay overdone. It was kind of funny, actually, to watch them.

it was the 80's! :)

i love this movie, it's hilarious!!

I *LOVE* how the mafia wives dress up to go to the supermarket! I lived on Long Island in the early 80s, and there were some women around who dressed almost as over-the-top. I was in college, and there were girls who actually put on glitzy sweaters and eye make-up for an 8:00 AM class.

They were what the average 80s gal was aspiring to, trust me.

I had a royal blue silk jacquard dress with HUGE shoulder pads, with a blousy top, a drop-waist, and like a cummerbund around my hips. I _loved_ that dress, and would not be caught dead in it today. We had crazy-big shoulder pads then. If you doubt it, watch Dynasty sometime.

reply

Yeah, it's partly because the movie was made in the 80's, and partly because Mafia wives actually dressed like that, especially in the 70's and 80's - huge hair, tacky sweaters and knits, caked on make up.

Remember the house party in GOODFELLAS where Karen Hill comments that the Mafia wives have bad skin, wear too much makeup and wear clothes that look thrown together and cheap.
