This movie is horrible

This movie had one good moment in that and thats the hit on the train. The rest of the movie was very cheesy along with the nicknames. Tony "The Tiger" Russo may be the lamest mafia nickname i've ever heard.

reply

great foot rub scene

reply

And stupid, to boot.

The movie was intended to be over the top, comic book style, see?

Hence the graphics. (Look up "hence.")

are you aware that your supposed to laugh at comedy?

This film is what is called satire.
Look it up and learn something.

Kaneforgov is 100 % CORRECT !!!

I loved this movie when I was 13. I am now 30 and looking back on it, it does seem kinda cheezy but that's what made it so much fun to watch. Still enjoy the movie but you have to be in the right mood.

reply

This movie is great and I'm not only saying that because I'm a Pfeiffer fan.
This movie is so funny, and that is what comedy/satire is supposed to be.
If you're a Godfather fan and expecting another exciting mob movie, don't watch this.
If you like/love comedies and a good laugh, watch it!!

reply

I didn't like it either. I found the comedy very corny, with almost every gag falling flat. I would rate this as Jonathan Demme's worst movie.

reply

It's a very good movie. Alot better than some of the garbage that passes for entertainment these days.

I actually met a guy in a bar in New Jersey around 1989 who introduced himself to me as "Tony...Tony the Tiger", whilst trying to pick up me or the girlfriend with me, I don't think he cared! He must have been in his 40s (we were both 21) and he was playing up the "mafiosa" style. I'm not saying that he actually *was* some sort of mob guy--just that he was playing to the stereotypes.

He didn't seem to think his nickname was cheesy--in fact, he seemed pretty taken with it and himself.

So ... was he any good in bed?

Pfeiffers acting is the best thing about this movie, though it feels oddly out of place.
A very dramatic role in a silly comedy.

I just loved the scene where she asks for a job at the hair salon. She looked so vulnerable. Kinda got to me.

It's a decent movie that could have been a lot better...

maybe i wasn't in the right mood to watch it, but i didn't like it. I knew it was a comedy, and the whole time i was sitting there thinking, this isn't funny. The only time i got a few laughs was at the very end. It was a so so movie, though as people said, better than the cr@p there is now, that is for sure.

Many of you may know me from other posts or my writings or opinions from my career. Whatever the case - I am a critic of some credibility. For instance, "There Will Be Blood" edges " No Country For Old Men" for its primitivism and its falling away from conventions then adhering all to strictly to very familiar madness. OK. That being said "Married To The Mob" is my favorite film of all time. I saw it at the United Artists 6 Theater in Marina Del Rey when I was 7, August of 1988. The film amazed me then and still does now. It is actually a mafia sting story set to crazed music and infused with everything and the kitchen sink. There are disenfranchised FBI agents. Killers trying to make names for themselves. Women trying to amend their ways. A child left without a father. A power hungry woman obsessed with her husband. Everything is in this film. It is a window into the world of commercial 1980s filmmaking and it completely mock everything it does in the story. People talk awkwardly into the camera at times, everything seems to yield with no realization of being filmed. I have never seen a film so bravely use the POV shot as Demme soes in this film. Some of yall can trip, but this movie is perfect. If you watch this film looking to find archetypes, you will find them. Connie Russo (Mercedes Ruehl) and her pack of chicas are emulative of a pack of sirens and Tony is a misbegotten Neptune (Dean Stockwell) in search of Babylon. I loved "Citizen Kane", "8 1/2", "The Seven Samurai" "Shawshank Redemption" Pulp Fiction, and many other classics but in terms of executing a madcap touching at times action packed mafia farce this movie hits its goal more than those films, and its goal is really not that simple. The action may be cheesy, but the final shootout is always surprising and the Burger World shootout has mad action and a clown trying to assassinate a mafiosos, so you can't beat that. I dont care about imdb ratings much but 6.0 is kind of a low rating, comparably. The 1980s were all about sensationalism and the start of mass commercialization and Demme knew that and made a mafia satire where a whole world of comedy existed. I bought the first draf of the script at auction and it had many more characters and craziness. This and "Something Wild" overlap in characters and themes and in both films I feel it is justifiable to root for the bad guy. I love ths film and will always respect Michelle Pfeiffer's gaul to wear some of these costumes without giggling. The film is not a straightforward piece of pie and it should really be examined by all film buffs much further. Demme went on to make "Silence of The Lambs" 2.5 years later and has since been a rather hot commodity, but it is with this film that he thoroughly worked his plan and planned his work. When grading a movie, consider how much a film hits its goal. "Naked Gun" was and is funny, but "MTTM" brings a higher social intelligence to every scene and could itself exist as a crime story, albeit a very odd one, but it exists as a monstrous satire, from rotic mafia rendesvouzes to men of a thousand costumes to the extravagant, mockingly sculpted haircuts, the movie used every Oscar winner Colleen Atwood costume and every briliant Tak Fujimoto lensingto make a piece of satire that is artful and a preservation of a time and a place. Everyone had a good time on this movie and everyone knew there work was gonna be out there. They just didn't know it would stand up to be brilliant.

trutoulouse...

Well, suit yourself. Though this may be your all time movie, I must say I was unable to get past the incredibly bad performance of Matthew Modine. I cringe when I see him in some kind of intimate relationship with Michelle. In addition, the camera work that highlighted the "over the top" facial expressions of Modine and of Stockwell (and others) wasn't particularly comedic or farcical, which I assume was its intent. It's possible that at the time the industry was trying to push Modine as some sort of movie idol, but it didn't surprise me that he didn't make the grade. On the other hand, I do understand that this was a movie-making era where in many of the movies actors were expected to over-act. Thus, given the context, it doesn't surprise me that at the time this movie was released it was quite entertaining. As a (respected?) movie critic, I'm surprised that you would elevate this movie to the highest ranking, given that it surely can't be considered one for the ages. It hardly ranks with such movies as Gone with the Wind or The Wizard of Oz which, to this day, are still revered.

I just watched it and thought it was great. I love the photography, the characters, some of the acting is brilliant. It's a great satire, a great comedy, I thought. I knew this going into it, I wasn't expecting GoodFellas here, come on. Stockwell, Baldwin, they were brilliant, but Michelle Pfeiffer was amazing. I haven't seen much of her recently but this is probably her best work.

I guess the only problem would be Modine, but at times even he suited the action, he worked great with Oliver Platt for example, their scenes were brilliant. Maybe the rest of it wasn't as good...

reply

I... I think I love you.In a strictly Plutonic sense of course.

Those who hate this movie, simply do not get it. The acting is brilliant and it stands alone in ti's era. i think most of the people critiquing it were probably born withing 6 years of it's filming, and thus, have NO idea what they are talking about.

I love this movie. "You know what Angela...it all boils down to good follicles...you've been blessed...one head in a million." The beauiful Pfeiffer plays this role great. This helped launch her career. It was her first actual headlining moovie. I love her! I love Dean Stockwell! and Oliver Platt and Trey Wilson and all the other Demme regulars play well. It is like an RKO production, a Mercury Theater of Welles that Demme throws down with. This movie is superb.

I agree with Trutoulouse in previous posts on this thread... and I would add that one of my favorite devices in this movie is the jingle that Tony and his buttonman sing while driving to get burgers. It's layering like this that makes the comedy so strong - almost like putting a mirror in a room to make it look bigger. Also, the song is funny - I can almost remember most of the lyrics. But then right during the shootout, one of the figures is about to be killed and he says "Don't" in a frightened, surprised, innocent way. It's really a challenging addition in the midst of the humor. In fact, the way this movie comingles violence with humor predates Tarentino and most of the Coen's attempts that follow the same path. As to the latter, the Coens... even they created fake theme-songs in "Big Lebowksi" - remember Jeff singing "Branded" in the back of the Sheriff's cruiser? It wouldn't surprise me that this movie inspired that. 6 is way to low for this. I would rank comedies like this on the basis of how many times have I seen it, or if I saw it playing on television randomly, would I pause to watch it? This is at the least worth a mid-7, so I'll give it an 8.

For me it's kind of silly the beginning when Modine is pretending to be a tiger and is growling (very embarassingly) at Tony...
