It lost money? Doesn't sound possible

says budget approx. 1M,and gross 600K.
Was this a ltd release? Wouldn't this had to be a hit for sequels to be made?

I guess it made its money as a video release back in those days. Video releases was a burgeoning market in those days, with films getting a limited release in the cinema and giving it a cache when out on video. This was a common way of getting funding for many British films in the late 80s. Pretty soon after we have many more movies that were straight to video.

Its that man again!!

If it only grossed less than a million in theatres, something is off. Knowing how many theatres showed the film would give us a better idea.

I'm sure it made more than that..... not millions upon millions but maybe only a small loss.

I agree the Video Market probably secured the Sequels production. Seeing that MC 2 was also a theatrical release this on must have done very respectable business.

According to IMDB it was only shown on 50 screens upon it's release, hence the low box-office takings. However here in the U.K. during the early 90's I remember the Maniac Cop films being a very popular VHS movies. My older brother rented them several times from our local video store, so I'm guessing Maniac Cop made enough money from VHS (worldwide) to warrant its two sequels.

Death to Videodrome, long live the new flesh!

That's stupid. If a film is only released on 50 theatres, what do they expect? And if business is doing well, it would make sense to release it in more theatres.

The first two movies were both cinema releases here in the UK, and the series was huge on VHS in this country as well. Right until the late Nineties you couldn't walk into a video shop without seeing the Maniac Cop movies on the shelves.
