Margaret More Roper

Margaret More Roper's appearance at More's execution is not historical (of course neither are the films, which are based on a play, not history; this is just additional info on the historical character). When More was pronounced guilty and led back to the Tower, Margaret did break through the guards surrounding her father twice to embrace him and bid him good-bye. His adopted daughter, Margaret 'Mercy' Giggs, was the only one of his family to witness More's execution, and took custody of his headless body, assisting Margaret More Roper to bury their father in the chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula where his bones still lie. More's skull, ransomed by Margaret More from Tower Bridge, where it was exposed as were the heads of all alleged traitors, reposes in a niche behind a grill in the Roper Family vault in St. Dunstan's Church, Canterbury. It was originally buried with Margaret at Chelsea when she died at the age of 39. It was moved, with Margaret to Canterbury on the death of Margaret's husband William.
