where was it filmed?

Especially the first shot, with pans slowly an impresive landscape of blocks and factories. This images made a strong impact and had stay with me since I first saw the film.

Another thing: There are a lot of places like this in Russia? this particular place has remained unchanged?

Some russian friend can ask my questions?

reply

I don't know where it was filmed, but my guess is it was somewhere east or possibly of Moscow; Kazan, Yeketerinburg, Volgograd, Kazan....don't know. I'm not Russian but I've visited friends there several times and yes things pretty much look the same. Its a wonderful, yet surreal place for someone from the west. There's alot of difference from then and now; new stores & products, no shortages, etc...but it still looks relatively the same.

Thanks for your reply, I´ve a particular fascination for this kind of places. In the next years I planned to make the transiberian route and fill my eyes with stuff like that!

This movie was filmed in Maruipol (Ukraine)

Actually You can see this landscape in any ex-Soviet city
Good luck!

reply

First of all, thanks for your reply, Konstantin. Anyway, how do you know it? you´re from there? I checked the wikipedia entry and Maruipol seems to had been the third most polluted city in former USSR. So, you really can see this devastating landscape in any ex-soviet city or Maruipol was a bit too much?

reply

Ok, guys, it's a typical USSR phobia. Yes, I've been living in Mariupol since 2001 upto now.

Yes, there are two steel plants at Mariupol - Ilyich Iron and Steel Works (one of the major Ukrainian steel factories) and Azov Steel.

Yes, ecology is not so good, but still ppl are living here, ppl are marrying, children are born. It's not some kinda Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion.

And one more thing - far not EVERY Ukrainian (or if you say USSR) city is like that. Only 20-15 cities are of the same industrial type.

On the other hand, there are a lot ecologically clean places, Crimea, Western Ukraine, etc.

Guys, don't be USSR phobs! Ppl live here too!

reply

I agree completely.
People are still afraid of visiting these places because of the pollution, the mafia etc
The media just exaggerate these problems when it's for Eastern Europe countries.

reply

Thanks for the question (and the answers). I was curious about the city too.
