Never shown and no DVD

You never see this movie on cable and there is no DVD . Does anyone know the reason ? Is it being held up over a legal dispute ?

reply

It is on Movieplex as I write this.

I'm going through all my old VHS's and need to get them out the door. So I'm over at Amazon.com getting the Kate Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine movies added to the wish lists and cart and this one is not there on DVD, nor is Used People!! :-(

I really really wish whomever is in charge of getting the classics transferred and into the stores (on line or otherwise) would get on the ball. I no longer have a VHS player, not going to invest in another one but won't get rid of the VHS version until the DVD's are available.

Sigh....

reply

It is available through Starz on Netflix Instant View but apparently no DVD.

I bought the DVD two days ago. But I'm in Turkey :S

reply

Yeah. If it's sold in any other country, it's a bootleg.

I just watched on HBO on demand.

I thought the relationship was bordering on pervy.

Also what was with Mr. C? Was he gay? Was that why he was beat up?

reply

I agree with you: the relationship was beginning to show some s/m features,
and some sexual interest in the boy.
Unfortunately, he did not realize that he joined an 'elite' of gay adults,
so this would be his immediate future: a kind of young prostitute.

I think Mr C was beaten because of that: he had made an 'arrangement' with
some youngster and the friends appeared to rob him and to beat him, that's
why they called him a 'queer'.

The talented boy was wrong, he should have stayed with Madame, SHE was
right all the time: he was NOT ready to have a debut with orchestra with
no experience at all, that leaves EMOTIONAL SCARS for life, if you fail(She
had them!)

I think the film was inspired by the story of Maria Curcio, one of the
best piano teachers who lived in London -she was Italian- and was
a professor of Barry Douglas, who appears in the film. She invited her
students for dinner and had many 'connections' with managers, but
she was an extremely expensive teacher...

reply

Am in the middle of it on Netflix streaming and am turning it off because Shirley MacLaine overacts outrageously, IMHO.

"I think I'll have a large order of prognosis negative."

reply

It is one of Shirley's hammier roles, but I think her character calls for her histrionic performance.

This is a decent film that seemed to attract a small following when it was released, but it's been largely forgotten now. I give it 7/10 stars.

reply

It's sort of a novel film, in the UK at least - as it was the first one to get a 12 certificate - but it was only for London. It was an experiment. It later got a 15 on VHS release. It still is a 15.
