Why so freaky looking?

Saw a funny review of this and wondered what was going on with the designs of the aliens. Big eyes, no expressions, and mouths opened as if they are constantly whistling. It's far too obvious that mac is a puppet. With the clips shown I didn't see an alien at all but some lifeless doll.
