One of the many movies I wish would come to DVD.

I am waiting patiently but I might have to start killing people. :)

Yeah. I was reduced to buying an old US vhs copy on ebay. Though I kind of like the fact its hard to get hold of. It makes me feel special.

I've got a bit of a Rene LaLoux collection going now, and none of his stuff is easy to get hold of.
Fantastic Planet - Imported from US, long-deleted.
Time Masters - Imported French DVD.
Gandahar (never going to call it Light Years)- Tracked down US NTSC 17yr old VHS.

What do people think of Gandahar anyway? I reckon if I'd seen it as a kid it really would have made a big impression on me. The legions of black-armoured death "robots" are pretty striking. The story is a bit simple and seems rushed, but it's got lots of incredible imagery.

My grandparents used to let us watch this movie when we were little. My sister and I have been looking for it for years, we couldn't even remember what it was called. So you can imagine my immense delight when finding a bootleg DVD of it at a convention in my area, today in fact. When I popped it in and began to listen to the opening music I was just overwhelmed as the whole movie replayed itself in my in a second. This is a movie that has stayed with me for close to a decade and here it is in my hands. It was so powerful that I had to shut it off about ten minutes into it. I'm going to try and wait and watch it with my sister, just like the old days. I know she'll have the same reaction to it.

I absolutely recommend this movie to any sci-fi fan. The animation and the voice acting (english) will most-likly feel out-dated, but it gives the movie more character.

I didn't see this one until quite recently so i don't feel the whole "part of my childhood thing". Watching it as an adult with no prior experience of it I found that the story wasn't the best, but at the same time it's full of terrific, fantastical, moments and scenes. And, unsurprisingly as it's a Rene LaLoux film, some of the imagery is very striking (the journey through the living computer, the armies of black "death-bots"...).

I was lucky enough to find the film on VHS and had a guy transfer it onto DVD using one of those appliances, VCR on one side, DVD on the other. I love this movie.

Avoid the english version at all cost coz it's missing a lot of the wonderful Gabriel Yared soundtrack.

Is Light Years coming out on DVD? I loved Light Years when I saw it as a kid. Where can I get it?

reply

Light Years isn't, but Gandahar is. This is one place which sells it: http://www.bensonsworld.co.uk/dvd/7000000129160.asp

I watched it a long time ago, and just recently re-acquired it. It's definitely one of those films that stays with you in the back of your mind, maybe even just for the visual style if nothing else.

I had the wonderful luxury of seeing this movie, as well as Heavy Metal (1981) and Tonari no Totoro (1988) when I was rather young (7-9). While at this age I didn't quite comprehend all the philosophy behind the first two movies, nor the artistry of the last, they still had a very large impact on me.

Much of the fiction I write today is heavily influenced by these movies (particularly, huge surreal landscapes dotted by tall copper, bronze and steel structures.)

While Heavy Metal has survived well on DVD, and Totoro has seen a revival thanks to Disney cashing in on Ghibli's ability to do a much better job, I'm a bit sad to see that Gandahar was/is so forgotten =/

As for it being released on DVD in the original language.

Considering how many times I watched this movie as a child, I don't think I'll mind much watching it in raw french. If anything I'll just pull in a favor from a Canadian friend that owes me and have him translate the script to english :3

Yes, I know the original dub is probably alot better in quality. But to be perfectly honest, I grew up watching it in English. Its just what I'm used to (though I still want to see it in french for the language and sountrack ^_^)

The movie on DVD can be found on e-bay. I'm pretty sure that it's a VHS to DVD but the quality is really incredible
