Too good to be an Anime.

This is an excellently crafted animated series and is too good to be put into the category of Anime. Too often we have cute child characters put into absurd situations which often revolves around some form of a mech.

This series has the following:

1) Space ships which resemble space ships not some poncey flying robot.
2) No main child characters at all (with exception of Julian Minci).
3) Quality and appropriately selected classical music.
4) Intelligently portrayed tactics something that you are never likely to see in anything else animated or otherwise.
5) A series which has no qualms about killing off main characters.
6) Excellent background stories and character development enable you to gain a real understanding of the characters and their lives leading up to these events.

This series would make an excellent television/film series if adapted and is one of the only decent Animes out there. Despite its slow start I would recommend this to anyone whose interested in sci-fi/war regardless if they are an Anime lover or not!

If it's a Japanese cartoon it's anime. People always assume that anime is Pokemon, it's not. Anime has a lot of sub categories underneath it. True, most of the stuff you see on Amercian tv is the cutesy Pokemon crap with the annoying child main character, but there are a lot of really good quality anime out there that you have to work hard to find, and Legend of Galactic Heroes is possibly one of the best examples of that.

You may also want to look for stuff by Hayao Miyazake, particularly Porco Rosso and Nausicaa of The Valley of the Wind.
