The 7.3 rating for this film is criminal.

This is a brilliant film that I personally found to be as important/enjoyable/deep as any mainstream Disney film. Don Bluth should be considered a legend in animation. I mean come on, An American Tail? All Dogs Go to Heaven? The Secret of NIMH? Fantastic movies, great hand drawn animation. Darkness and emotional depth. And that's not just me turning my nostalgia meter up, it's fact. Raise that rating people!

People with no imagination don't appreciate imagination.

agreed! i am rewatching all dogs go to heaven (i used to watch it all the time when i was a kid) and i think it's really unfair that these movies never achieved the same status as some classic disney movies.

Honestly, other than the score, this film doesn't do much for me. I do think Don Bluth's other 80s films deserve more praise, but this one is pretty boring. I did like it as a kid, so I guess it's good for kids but has no adult appeal.

I must respectfully disagree.

I can understand why; however, the reason why I still like it is because of how... magical/realistic/not obvious it is... if that makes sense.

To me, the fact that the movie is more subdued adds to it. Compared to a big budget Disney movie, this one is able to focus on a bunch of kids who are confused. The other thing that I like is that the children act like children. They are jerks, they can be kind, they can get scared easily, but they are still kids. I feel like other movies glorify childhood too much, to the point of it not being childhood.

I don't know, it is confusing. The reason I like this movie is the same reason I like Spirited Away. As far as a narrative goes, it isn't the best, but it is the mood, atmosphere, and... honesty? (I guess) that makes it work.

While I can't argue against your point and I mostly agree, it doesn't apply to this movie for me.

I have very vague memories of this movie when I was a kid. So much so, that when I gave this movie a watch a few days ago, I felt like it was watching it for the first time. While it had its moments, I feel that the movie did not age well. I guess it was nostalgia that I felt before watching it. I think it's time to remake this movie and tweak the plot some; it would do quite well.

Considering that the movie is a movie and therefore not subject to "aging", I think it is much more plausible that you have not aged well.

I just watched it again after many, many years (thanks netflix) and I gotta say....it's just as great as I remember it being when I was a kid. Brilliant indeed :)

reply

Agreed! It's one of the best family movies ever!

To me, Secret of NIMH, All Dogs Go To Heaven, An American Tail, and Land Before Time are the best Don Bluth films.

The Brave Little Toaster also has a 7.3 rating. Both these films should have higher scores.

Agree with you brother. Underrated gold.
