Kieslowki -one of the best all time directors and also very underrated

"short film about killing" it is the best and most realistic movie about crime and punishment, yet that masterpiece is mostly unwatched and compared to so called "great" movies like"The Green mile" and "dead man walking".
Now...i have nothing against those two movies ,but "The green mile " and "dead man walking"are not even in the same league with"Short film about killing"
More people should watch his movies if they want to see a really great cinema.

p.s:good example....no message boards under this movie(just started)
Watchit and enjoy it.

Kieslowki, underrated?! You're very mistaken, in the critic circle he's considered one of the most unbelievably significant auteurs of the 20th Centuary. It makes more sense to lable him over-rated than underrated!

reply

I completely agree with you. There are not much directors that can be compared to him.

reply

Guys you're right, but Scipio has a point on Kieslowski being underrated. The critic circle may have given him a place in the elite of the auteurs, but isn't it a pity that so many few people get so see his movies? I mean Bergman is also glorified by the critics, but his work is pretty well known in America, as it is in Europe. So is Kurosawa, Fellini and so many other great auteurs. Kieslowski's work? Not even for a joke. Most of the american viewers are unfamiliar even to the Colours trilogy, light years away from the Decalogue or anything else. He just isn't "trendy". Just take a look at how many people have voted anyone of his films, and compare it to anyone else.

reply

Well it's hardly surprisng the way in which Kieslowski's differs from other foreign Directors is that they are rather insular in the matierial they deal with.

The average joe is not going to be willing to sit through a film, which has its main focus on the three ideals of the French revolution.

I recently grabbed this film from hollywood video in a sweet 5 for $20 deal (the title alone lured me in) along with a couple b-grade schlockfests. I have yet to watch it but after reading reviews and comments I am particularly excited to see it. I can't wait, I'm watching it when i get off work in an hour!!

Hi there.

Doing well ?

I would say that Krzysztof Kieslowski is not underrated but less famous as other great directors. In every critics's books you can read how they love him just like we do too.

Every real movie buff knows about him and his work, it's the average people who does not.

I'm just a fan of his work like many persons and I would have loved to play under his direction.

To me he was one of the greatest movie director ever.

Have a nice day.

Come to Poland:)))And ask about Kieslowski.

I can vouch for that, my school is a cultural wasteland and a Polish kid heard me talking about Kieslowski to my friends and congratulated me on knowing him (I live in England). He seemed pretty proud to come from the country of one of the greatest directors ever!

Kubrick called the Dekalog, "the only masterpiece in my lifetime"

reply

The original poster is correct that Kieslowski, who is a great film-maker, isnt as well known as others, esp to the general audience. but then what else do you expect when the media doesnt have time for anybody except Spears, Hilton and Olsen twins. no wonder our knowledge is so limited.
by the way - I love his film Blue a lot.

reply

Kieslowski is not "underrated" by the people who knows his work (Among them most if not all filmmakers). Actually Kubrick himself called "Decalogue" the great masterpiece of our time. The only movie that Kubrick wished he could have had shot.
I guess what the OP wanted to say is that Kieslowski remains practically unknown for the masses in such countries like USA and many others.

Well, that's true, his works are not as "popular" as Steven Spielberg or George Lucas works but neither Eisenstein, Tarkovsky or Buñuel are that popular, and all of them IMO are among the best 10 directors of all time.

Kieslowski is among my 5 fav directors of all time, being the other 4: Hitchcock, Kubrick, Buñuel and Fellini.

and among all the directors I've known IMO Kieslowski is the most "humanist", the one who shows more respect for the human being in his movies. The one who makes you think more than twice about you and your life and the choices you makes all the time.

Kieslowski was a genious, a master.

reply

The OP is right. Kieslowski is quite unknown in non-european countries. But this might have to do with the fact that his masterpiece and his best work "Dekalog" was released quite late on DVDs and also the difficulty in screening it because of its length. IMO Kieslowski is one of the best if not the best directors of all time and should get the fame that he deserves.
