Filters in 'a short film about killing' *spoilers*

can any one tell me what type of filters Krzysztof Kieślowski used? the colour until after the hanging was very distinct almost like high contrast but obviously it wasn't.

also the dark halos that surrounded people in the movie or just darkened certain areas of the screen, can anyone tell me what effect they were supposed to have, was it just supposed to draw attention to a particular part of the screen? I'm sure there must more of a reason than that.

thanks

the cinematographer used green filters to create the poster-like effect.
The effect increases desolution of the environment and to help isolate the main characters from everyone else around them. theres an interview with cinematographer Slawomir Idziak on the special features of the dvd

"For much of the film, the edges of the frame are slightly obscured, as if there's dirt on the lens; the point seems to be that there's only so much about this story that we can really know." - Rob Nelson; Citypages; http://www.citypages.com/1996-02-28/arts/thou-shalt-not-miss/

"Aiding him in making the claim that only a totally corrupt society could support institutionalised killing is his frequent cinematographer Slawomir Idziak, whose vision of Warsaw is one draped in foul orange tinting, achieved by putting colored gels directly on the camera, covering only a portion of the frame (so that only the top half will be rust-colored, or the bottom left corner, or everything but a square in the middle). The result is one of the ugliest movies ever made, and that's just exactly the way it should be: it takes place in an irredeemably ugly world." - Antagony & Ecstasy blog; http://antagonie.blogspot.com/2008/08/tspdt-542-short-film-about-killing.html

I know this is a five year old comment, but thank you for the explanation. I just finished watching this great film, and was wondering in the first fifteen minutes if I'd seen a damaged print or something. The technique is very effective.

I didn't like the filter that was used. At times it was way too dark and it made me feel so constrained.

As is the intent I believe.
It is almost claustrophobic. I really love the visual choices.
