about the taxi driver etc.

im talking about the 80 some minute version btw.

i assumed that there'd be this twist where it was revealed that the taxi driver had poisoned that dog with the sandwich...and the way he spoke to it is what gave me the idea. and when he said he hated cats, as i think he did, he said they were like people and you couldn't trust them, so i thought he hung that cat which looked to be around the same area.
and the way he was creeping on Jasek's lady friend i thought Jasek knew about this guy and had a motive for killing him, and then the girl recognized his car and saw the blood so i thought they were more aquainted with the taxi driver, but it turned out all to be untrue i suppose. i also wonder why (it wasn't shown if it happened) the lawyer didn't tell Jasek that he saw him in the cafe that day.

*** SPOILERS *** (Does this film need such a warning?)

I don't think he hanged the cat either. Although who knows? Only Kieslowski and his co-writer would know the answer and I know at least one of them is dead so might be a bit tricky to find out. lol

The opening of the film plays out the plot in minature. We see a dead rat, presumably killed by a cat that is hanged. When we see the cat we hear what sounds like a group of boys running away, presumably the boys who hanged the cat. So a predator (the cat; Jacek) kills a prey (the rat; the taxi driver), and is then hanged by a group (the boys; society).

Excellent synopsis of an excellent film, TopFrog!

I know it is a late reply, but Top Frog, thank you. I had missed that analogy. Obvious when someone points it out eh? Exactly the sort of thing IMDb should be good at. You did a good days work when you posted that comment...

Smart.

Interesting observations, TopFrog.

I assumed it was the children, but watching that part I hoped for the cat's sake that it wasn't killed and only hanged for some reason by the kids. They probably did kill it though.

I wanted the lawyer to ask WHY he did it though.
That would have been too 'obvious' IMO.

And apart form anything else, does anyone, including the person who commits murder, ever really know/find out "why?" ?

I think it was perfect the way it was left in the film, and I also feel that in such situations it would be just a bit too voyeuristic to try and find out in order to satisfy ones curiosity.

VERY harrowing (and good) film, this.
