question about final scene *spoilers*

i was confused by the hanging scene because the idea behind hanging someone is to break their neck, and this did happen in the film as the doctor pronounced him dead a few seconds after he fell, but what i cant understand is how his neck would break when he only appeared to fall a few inches, was this just for the film and the safety of the actor or is this exactly how a hanging was carried out in Poland

i know that when we used to hang people in Britain a technique called the "long drop" was used and the condemned criminal would fall a certain distance according to their weight to make sure their neck would break

Either Poland's hangings were in fact long-drawn-out affairs, or it was considered risky to the actor to give him a long drop.

Actors who are 'hanged' in films ALL wear concealed neck braces. I've heard of actors suffering for their art but I don't think even Brando would go 'method' for a hanging somehow mate!

Yeah, it was kind of a lame hanging.

Not at all. And contrary to the discussion above, it was a very accurate depiction of a TYPE of hanging, one that doesn't required a breaking of the neck when strangulation will suffice. Either way, the criminal gets what he deserves, I suppose. :)

It wasn't just the the lack a "long drop".... ie this person was killed by strangulation rather than by having his neck broken.... it was also how the whole procedure was such a long drawn out procedure.

Here's the equivalent British technique as depicted in the BBC drama "The last hangman"
