One of the best movies ever

For me this is one of the best movies ever, just cinema perfection imo.

Hope it creeps into the top 200 list or what ever it is on this site.

Indeed. A fantastic film.

I'm not going there to die. I'm going to find out if I'm really alive.

This was one of the most depressing and saddest movies I've ever seen. Just the look of the film alone - the pale colours, the ugly grey concrete block houses of communist Poland, the cold & unhappy expression on the face of every character etc. - was off-putting, but also the boy's unrequited love (more like obsession really), his creepy peeping tom behaviour and suicide attempt made it hard to watch. None of those things alone are that terrible, but the film just reeks of hopelessness, like none of the characters feel any reason to live and they're all just waiting for their turn to commit suicide. Not a movie I'd watch again or call great: apart from the director's attempt to make us feel bad, the story itself was pretty bland and unrewarding. This was the first Kieslowski (and Polish) movie I've seen and I hope most of the others are more cheerful and better...

I thought Kieslowski contrasted the grimness of an oppressive state, as represented in the things you name, with the colours in Magda's hallway and apartment, plus the artwork she seemed to be working on that was affixed to the wall. Red was the dominant colour for vitality and desire, which were alive within Tomek and Magda.
Keep silent unless what you are going to say is more important than silence.
