fantastic

one of cinemas best kept secrets this touching and tragic love story is among the best movies i have ever seen.

I couldn't agree with you more.

This film is beautiful and tops my list of the best love stories (just overtaking The Crying Game and Brief Encounter).

If you ever get to see Grazyna Szapolowska or Olaf Lubaszenko in other films, do. Grazyna is superb in Andrzej Wajda's 'Pan Tadeusz' and Olaf Lubaszenko is amazing in 'Zabic Sekala'.

The scene where Tomek is on the roof with the ice held against his ears and the one where Magda breaks down in tears when she knocks the milk bottle over are so touching, but the far-and-away greatest moment is the one where Tomek follows Magda out of the post office. You can just feel the intensity of what's going through Tomek's mind and the shock Magda must feel. Overwhelming.

Which part did you like best, gjn1973?

reply

I agree David and gjn1973. I absolutley love this film. I was reminded of it today because they are showing Dekalog on TV.

I haven't seen it in years but it is still by far my favourite Kieslowsi film and one of my favourite films full stop.

I must buy the longer version, as I only have the shorter Dekalog one.

I love the spilt milk scene. And the scenes where Tomek says he loves her and she dismisses him and "shows him what love is" - it's so tragic and beautiful.

Tomek is such an adorable character. i love it when he is spinning his milk cart in the centre of the tower blocks.

Soo much. I must watch it again.

I saw this movie this afternoon at the Film Society theater in Lincoln Center. I loved it. It is so touching and fascinating and sexy. So much is going on among the three main characters--including Tomek's landlady. It is winner.

It's one of my favouriet films.

It jsut makes ou think about the lengths that some film makers go to when all you really need is simple human story.

reply

fantastic film I just watched the longer version and on the extras is an interview with Grazyna Szapolowska she states that she didn't know when she was being filmed and the director was watching her through a telescope. Magic.

reply

True.

I was obsessed with this movie when it first came out.

I will also add my name to the list of people who love this film. In my view, this is what movies should be like! My two favorite scenes were also when Tomket in on the roof and when he follods Madga out of the post office.

I do have a question though... the last scene, where Madga "dreams" that Tomkek is the one consoling her after she knocks the milk bottle... anything more to that scene other than the fact that she "wishes" now that she had someone like Tomkek in her life?

Again, excellent film!

I interpreted Magda's vision as her realization that even though she felt alone when the spilled the milk (and throughout the rest of her life), he was with her the whole time. Tomek also appeared older to me in that scene, so perhaps she was projecting into the future.

What a superb film. I need to watch this at least once a year to keep the dream alive.

This is the most real film I have ever seen. I have never seen a film that is so touching, tragic, melancholic, meaningful and beautiful all at once. I rate this film among my favorites. Everytime I watch it, I am fascinated.

reply

Yes I really liked this film too and I want to get it on dvd now. I won't be getting its companion piece though 'killing' because it was just too depressing.

I liked the humour and warmth in this one and any film with a sexy woman walking around in her pants a lot certainly gets my attention! lol

reply

Completely agree for the most part. it's currently my 5th favorite film of all time.

Absolutely stunning film - in my top 10 of all time (and the only Kieslowski I've ever seen is the Three Colours trilogy).

It's not just a cinematic masterpiece, but it's such a simple and grounded story that I genuinely believe anyone could watch it and be just as deeply affected as those who already love it.

I'm watching a movie EVERY DAY for 10 years. Follow me at: http://www.madmovieman.com.
