OMG! The Netflix version has an entirely DIFFERENT ENDING

SPOILER POSSIBILITY

And an entirely different killer than in the original (which I saw in the theater when it was released and also had the VHS tape).

It actually just ended before the original ending. Even my son, who has not seen the original, figured out who the killer was (as in the original film) and was gobsmacked when it ended with "another" killer. I explained to him what happened in the film - the different killer, the missing love scene and immediately came here to see what was posted about it... and, I was stunned no one else on this board has mentioned it yet.

I just find it amazing. Mostly that no one else commented. My son remarked that people probably didn't see the original and then my husband (who saw it with me) commented that people who saw it originally probably didn't want to see it again, so again, the alternate ending wouldn't be noticed.

I loved this movie, and I do see how dated it seems now, but ... well, am just stunned.

It'd probably help if you told us what actually happened in the ending you watched. Please?

*SPOLIER* -- so who was the killer in the version you saw. The problem I have is the whole psychiatrist going for the gun scen. I think it was the psychiatrist.

<b>SPOILER! SPOILER!</b>

Hi, sorry, I didn't want to reveal it, but hopefully the SPOILER note will stop people from reading further if they haven't seen it (scroll down)

Yes, you're absolutely right. The Netflix version just ended very abruptly and cut the actual ending out.

It was, indeed, Robert Piccardo's character, Dr. Carlos Battera.

I don't have the VHS copy any more or I would've watched it again. I would be really interested if someone else saw the original version, too, or if anyone knows why it was changed.

It was a really good, tight film.

so the netflix version has the different ending while the vhs copy has the original ending.

The movie is on Hulu now, and it has the same edit of the film. Sucks that this is the first time I watched the movie, and it's not even the complete version. I just saw The Howling the other day, and so, hearing that Picardo is the killer makes this film sound even better. Now, I can't find the original ending anywhere online, but I'm gonna keep searching. I might have to buy the VHS off of eBay or somewhere.

Okay, I obtained an original release VHS of the film, and that is the version that is on Hulu. Now, of course, SPOILERS!

Simply put, they arrest Jack, there are scenes at the police station, there's the scene in the shoe store, and then, the scene in the apartment with the unseen serial killer singing. Then, it cuts to black, and the final act begins with Ricky have another series of flashes. He then visits Dr. Battera at his home, gets hypnotized, and then, realizes that it was Dr. Tannerson that is the serial killer. There's then the race to save Chris from being the next victim, and so on. I assume this is the proper, original version of the movie running 97 minutes long. If so, you can watch "Jack's Back" in widescreen on Hulu, and I believe it is free to watch.

Now, I don't know what sex scene you were referring to since the VHS release features no sex scenes of any kind.

I've seen the Hulu, Netflix, and UK Region-2 DVD versions and they are all identical. And you also confirmed that the VHS was the same. The OP was the only one in this thread, and on the Internet apparently, who thought there was another ending. Clearly, the OP was mistaken due to faulty memory. An average person watches hundreds and thousands of films and TV shows in their lifetimes and could easily misplace similar scenes and plotlines in their heads.

The psychiatrist pulled out a gun due to SELF-DEFENSE against the seemingly hostile Rick. The movie clearly used that as a red herring.

I just purchased an import version of it tonight that is 97 minutes long. Honestly, I have not seen this movie since it was first released in the 1980s so I don't even remember the ending. I just came here to the board to see if there were any postings, so it looks like there ARE two versions. The disc I bought is NTSC so it plays on all DVD players and is "new and sealed". It has the same cover as the VHS tape (maybe it's ripped? Don't care as long as it plays decently). In the venue I bought it from there were also UK Region 2 versions running 93 minutes. There's also an Australian release but the seller did not give the running time.

I even just looked at Amazon. There is the VHS original tape there that is 97 minutes long, and the UK version Region 2 DVD is 93 minutes.

PS: the Netflix version is 1 hour 32 minutes
Hulu Version" 1 hour 36 minutes

Remember us, for we too have lived, loved and laughed

Please note that the starter of this thread is the only one I've heard on all of the Internet who claims there is an alternate ending. So does your VHS have this ending? If not, that's more confirmation the OP is mistaken.

reply

The difference in run-time will be due to the 4% speed-up factor with PAL versions, i.e. a 100-minute movie will run only 96 minutes on a PAL DVD or VHS, but the content is the same - it's just imperceptibly sped-up, one extra frame per second, due to the differing refresh-rates of the two TV systems. NTSC versions run at the normal speed, same as the cinema version.

I first saw Jack's Back on rental VHS way back in the 80s, and I own a DVD of it. Region 2 DVD, I'm sure. It's a genuine DVD, but the film's a full-frame presentation with a shoddy washed-out print that looks like a cheap VHS transfer.

SPOILERS!

The killer is the same in the DVD as I recalled from the original VHS. It's not Picardo, it's the elderly doctor guy. You're supposed to suspect Picardo for a while, but that's just misdirection - a red herring.

The ending is as described above: Spader goes to visit Picardo, realises who the killer really is, and races off to the woman's house for a showdown as the killer attempts to murder her. I've never seen any other ending, either in the 80s or since.

reply

That is exceedingly strange. Why would the Netflix version do that? Did they get a print for a TV version which was cut or something? That is really, really wierd.

reply

You are mistaken. I have a copy of the first run of VHS tapes for this movie. I bought my local movie rental's VHS copy when they decided to sell it. It DOES NOT have the psychiatrist as the killer. The killer has always been the elderly doctor from the free clinic where John and Chris worked. Rick realized the doctor was the serial killer after the psychiatrist put him under hypnosis the second time as he realized that the doctor had seen Jack hanging his brother. He saw the doc's shoes in the flashback and connected them to the shoe tracks outside Chris's house. He then realized that the killer had been stalking Chris, likely due to her telling the elderly doctor to 'F off, Sydney!' So he races to save her from being killed. Also, there are no sex scenes in this movie. I think you are confusing this movie ending with something else you have seen in the past.

reply

Hey OP, feel good and stupid now?

Way to stir up an unneeded $hitstorm. Your son is a dolt too for not being able to figure out who the killer was too. lmao

reply

You are one confusing/confused lady.
