Can I get this on DVD?

Anyone?

reply

Yes. I live in the UK and I got my copy from the local HMV.

reply

Is it availible in Region 1?

reply

I don't think so. I certainly have never seen an R1 version anywhere.

However there may be a copied version transferred from an old VHS tape floating around the internet somewhere. E-bay is probably the best place to look for it.

I live in Australia it's available here.I own it on region 4, Don't know about Region 1 though.

You can't get it in Denmark where i'm from, but i'm going to scotland in a couple of months, so does enyone knows if i can pick up there? region code dosn't matter.

reply

It´s available in Region 2 DVDs, you will definitely find it in the United Kingdom (just look at the dvd sections in any good music store like hmv, virgins, etc.). It is also available in Germany, where the DVD has both the original English and a German dubbed version. Or just try amazon... Shouldn´t be too difficult to get the film in Europe now.

Does anyone know if will be released Region 1 (US and Canada)?

Thanks, Jim

reply

No, but from what I've been told MGM has the rights for this movie, but they won't release it in DVD form for some reason. Probably Union related.

reply

it's fairly cheap in the UK, i think i got if for £3.

I was rummaging through an old box in the basement last summer and I ran across my original tape I had made from when this aired on CBS in 1988.

I rewatched it over the summer and was impressed at how well the movie stood up over time. It was riveting. The best made for TV movie I ever saw.

Michael Caine was excellent in this role, as was his sidekick and the lovely Jayne Seymour and Armande Assante.

I was thinking about transferring it to DVD. If interested, PM me.

Australian copy is ALL region (PAL), if you can still get it. Try www.umbrellaent.com.au

am interested in getting copy of jack the ripper with michael caine. is your dvd for united states. please let me know

reply

Why don't you multi-region your dvd player? The majority of players have code you can find on the net which you punch in with your remote and it'll make the player play any region of dvd. Easy.

reply

I would warn people who are buying Jack the Ripper from here in the UK to be very careful when they order. There are two versions floating around. A basic version with no extra's and no digital tidying up of the picture and one that has some good extras and has been cleaned up digitialy.

The covers are only slightly different.

Hope this helps in a way!

Australian one (Umbrella DAVID 0339) has commentary track, 16:9 transfer, 20 minutes footage from "original shoot", ALL Region PAL.
still available according to ezydvd.com.au

To all people wanting, or thinking of getting this DVD, AVOID it at all cost if you have a Region 1 DVD player, it won't work, and even if you own a DVD player that can play both formats NTSC, and PAL, it would be useless, because you still need a PAL TV to watch it on, if you have a TV that is in NTSC, and a DVD player that plays both formats, it still won't work, and you will be wasting your money, becareful and read the fine print in online auctions for PAL movies!, I hope this helps!

reply

Funny, I have an older ntsc tv, but it works fine, my dvd player is newr and is progressive scan, the progressive scan players seem to support pal and ntsc.

If you live in the UK, have a look at this - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/prmts/article-1026037/Michael-Caine-movie-collection-reader.html - and get it with the Daily Mail some time over the next couple of weeks. I wouldn't expect any digital remastering though, or any extras at all. Hope this helps!

I know there are sellers on eBay who have players which will play any region DVDs, REGARDLESS of what kind of TV you have. Also, I've seen this movie listed on eBay, and it ships from Greece. Apparently, that is in PAL format. I've been wanting to get a copy of this for years and years, but am leary of buying the Greek DVD, and don't have enough money right now to purchase a multi-region DVD player. But if you've got 100 bucks to throw around, I'd say get the Pioneer DV-400VK.

I got the FREE Dvd with the Mail newsrag, and it's in 16:9 with an obviously remastered picture. I was surprised - I was expecting very poor fullscreen.
You can pick it up on Ebay for a little over £1 if you missed it in the newspaper.
