Goofs galore.

In addition to the goofs listed , here are some more.

The women did not have a pimp.

There were no City Police around when Ms Eddowes was murdered , & she called herself Kate and not Cathy.

Sir William Gull did not examine the kidney , it was examined by Dr Openshaw then by Dr Brown.

John Pizer was a single man and had no kids , he also was mentally ill (according to most accounts).

When Liz Stride is murdered in Berner Street , the name on the wooden gates say "Duffields " instead of "Dutfields".

Catharine Eddowes mentions in the pub that she gave Mary Jane Kelly's name when she was arrested at Bishopsgate Police Station , she said "nothing" when asked her name , then later Mary Ann Kelly when she had sobered up.She did not go to the pub after her release. She also did not buy back the boots she pawned and they were her partner John Kelly's boots and not Mary Jane's.
From Casebook :Jack The Ripper - She turned left out the doorway which took her in the opposite direction of what would have been the fastest way back to Flower and Dean Street. She appears to be heading back toward Aldgate High Street where she had become drunk. On going down Houndsditch she would have passed the entrance to Duke Street, at the end of which was Church Passage which led into Mitre Square.

Mary Kelly opened her door with a key , the key was supposedly lost and she and Joe Barnett reached through the broken window (covered with an overcoat) to unlatch the door. She is wearing a bonnet in the movie but in reality she didn't.She is seen lighting an oil lamp , only a candle was in her room.

There was no mention of Joe Barnett.

The character of Mr Bowyer , who found Kelly's remains , is credited as "landlord" ,he was Mr John McCarthy's (the actual landlord)employee and was collecting the rent.
McCarthy himself is not even mentioned.

Abberline was from Dorset so he would not have spoken in a cockney accent.
He was also married , to a woman named Emma not the Emma in this storyline.

Fictional characters include : Billy White (Pimp) , Benjamin Bates , Emma Prentiss and Millie , Annette , and possibly Rodman .

Emma Prentiss DID exist, she worked for the paper, but she never interacted with Abberline, let alone had an affair with him. I don't even think she covered any of the Whitechapel murders or if she did, it was in a much smaller capacity and there was no love triangle with Richard Mansfield either.

I don't think William Gull had ANY relation to the Whitechapel Murders until that silly "Royal Conspiracy" theory was first put forward in the 1970s. I don't think he offered any consultation or had any interviews regarding the murders while they were happening. In fact, he was recovering from a stroke at the time. Putting him in the film as a suspect is a bit of a "cheat" because he was never so closely associated with the case until decades afterwards.

There is also absolutely nothing in the case to give the idea that any of the victims knew each other. Maybe old pros like Annie Chapman and Mary Ann Nichols were acquaintances in passing, but there were so many people living in Whitechapel at the time, it's unlikely.

Mary Ann Nichols' murder was at first closely associated with Martha Tabram's stabbing that occurred a few weeks prior, but the film makes no mention of it.

Just like with Mary Kelly, there is absolutely no mention of Catherine Eddows' long-term boyfriend, John Kelly. (No relation to Mary.)

Three of the victims look authentically "haggard," but Mary Kelly and Catherine Eddows are shown to be rather healthy, well kept, and wearing glamorous Victorian fashions. If the real Mary Kelly would've made one step outside the pub in that beautiful satin dress she wears in the film, she would've been immediately knocked on the head and the dress promptly ripped off. Also, as I mentioned above, there is virtually no chance Catherine Eddows and Mary Kelly would've known each if one reads their respective bios.

On the other hand, Liz Stride is shown much older and decrepit than she was in reality. She was also a Swedish immigrant, but the film portrays her as Cockney. And what really irks me is the film's implication that she was mutilated like the others, she wasn't. She either wasn't the Ripper's victim at all or he got scared off before he could finish the job and took all his frustration out on Catherine Eddows an hour later.

Thank you for pointing out the existence of Emma Prentiss to me , she did not feature in any Ripper books etc that i have read so i assumed she was fictional.

The rest of your reply i agree with 100% .

I have believed for years that Long Liz was not a ripper victim , Tabram i'm not sure about though.

I have been an avid ripperologist for 25 years , btw.

reply

Yes, the reason she's never mentioned in any of the Ripper literature is because she had absolutely no relation to the case. Just a random newspaper illustrator; he name was probably pulled out of a hat at random to provide a romantic interest for Abberline.

Oh, and as mentioned in the goofs, another major piece of information is that the film assumes Mary Ann Nichols was disemboweled and had organs removed. That didn't escalate until Annie Chapman, Mary Ann had her throat slit, and a long tear and stabs around her abdominal area, which is why her murder was co closely associated with Martha Tabram at the time.

Another piece that always catches me off-guard is the placement of Mary Kelly's bed in front of the window. It's been re-positioned by the filmmakers to obscure the gruesomeness of the crime scene. Similar trick was done in the 2001 From Hell movie.

reply

Key policemen on the case are never even mentioned : Halse , Thick , Watkins , Thompson , Spicer , Insp Reid , Insp Chandler , Chief Insp Swanson and Mizen etc.

From Hell was just a total piece of crap , imo. Abberline a drug addict and years younger than he was , and an alcholic in this one.
Abberline dying young in From Hell , what the hell , and falling in love with Mary Kelly 

I remember reading Stephen Knight's book--and he made a good case that at least 2 victims dossed at the same lodging house for a while.

reply

How the hell do you know if Mary Kelly did or did not wear a bonnet in real life?
