Line Dance question

It's been a number of years since I've seen the movie, but there is a line dance scene where they are dancing to a song with the chorus of "sweet pea" in it. I've heard this song before, mostly at oldies dance parties, but I have yet to find out who sung it. I've read the threads for the music and don't seem to think any of the discussions covered this particular song. It's driving me nuts! If anyone can enlighten me, I'd so appreciate it!

I'm a big fan, particularly since I grew up around the Philadelphia area in the 70's and have met Jerry Blavat personally a number of times......I think Joe P played an awesome job in that role!

it's "mine exclusively" by the Olympics. they're saying "sweet thing" instead "sweet pea". i think that's kind of a staple at those philly area dance parties - even though i'm not from there, i'm familiar with it.

someone's posted the song on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3kWo0lwQnQ

It's not "Sweet Pea". I know because this drove me nuts for years. It sounds very similar to "Heat Wave" by Martha & The Vandellas.

It took a good 10 years before I found the song, but it is: "The Real Thing" by Tina Britt. The line is "It looks to me like this could be-ee the real thing". Other parts line up from the words I could hear on the movie. Words like "absent minded" and "I start acting funny". Definitely it.

You should be able to find it on YouTube. Good luck on finding it on CD anywhere or for download. It seems to be incredibly obscure and released on a long-forgotten record label.

it's not that obscure, but it was a regional Philly hit. i bought a copy from Val Shively's in Upper Darby, Pa on the "Lost Nite" label.

reply

I referenced it with "seems to be" as I had an incredibly difficult time finding it. And I'm from PA. I had never heard of it before, and haven't heard of it since. My mom spent every summer in Philly with family back then, and she didn't know it.

The MP3 that I have notates that it was from "The Sue Records Story".

Obscure is subjective. My husband will come across some old New Wave hit and say "Did you ever hear of.....?" and I will know it. Just my area of expertise.

Ahhh, yes, Val Shively's! I've gotten soooo much music from Val over the years! A great place for those forgotten 'golden oldies'! And the 'Lost Nite' label--have a lot of them!

i had the honor of using val's bathroom - you know it's off-limits back there so i felt pretty special, hah.

reply

No, no, they sing, "there's a bathroom on the right", or is it, "'scuse me while I kiss this guy."?

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.
