Revenge of the barbarians

I am wanting to know if anyone has seen this film, and does it come on dvd? also is there anywhere in australia or on the net i kan get it? cheers

reply

Only with nordic subtitles this far i'm afraid.

reply

I found it on eBay. VHS with English subtitles.

reply

I wouldn't recommend it, I saw it on VHS with English subtitles, but the film itself is pretty awful, almost unwatchable, not even entertaining.

reply

I saw it on german TV some years ago, with german subtitles (if I remember that right). This film was fascinating. I do speak swedish and I am studying scandinavian history and culture, so maybe that was why I liked that movie.

Americans with their non-existant culture of course cannot wrap their minds around history older than 130 years or so...
Yes, it is gruesome and tragic, but I got a pretty good impression about how life was at that time in Island. Very realistic, as far as I could judge that. THAT makes a good movie!

But as always, things like that are judged by people's personal taste, and when you are not interested in scandinaian history and culture, you mind find this film unwatchable. So be it then, that is ok.

reply

Why was the AMerican comment neccesary. And we do have a culture. Do you listen to rock and roll, where do you think that came from.

reply

Isn't that what he just said?

"Americans with their non-existant culture of course cannot wrap their minds around history older than 130 years or so.."

reply

That is one of the most stupid and ignorant comments I have ever seen on this website. You ought to be ashamed of yourself for posting it. Both North and South America have rich cultures that have contributed much to the world. And this website would probably not exist if it weren't for the 100 years of the American film industry alone.

Ok, necroing a dead thread now, but anyway.
To be honest, I wouldnt be so sure about that statement actually. The film industry were much stronger in Europe than in the US in the start of the century (not saying the US industry was non existing, cause it was, but not as strong as the european).
The US industry took over after WW1 which can have several factors, but most likely due to european depression, specialy in germany where the movie industry was as strongest, and the fact that the US had a bigger audience.
If the US industry wouldnt have blossomed as it did in the 20's and the 30's up to the depression (and still grew during), we would probably see a European movie industry now in the likes of hollywood.

Anyway, the original statement about american culture was extremely harsh, but I think I see what he meant. The US culture is very young compared, and specially nowadays older things is discarded just on the basis of age which isnt as true in Europe (although the tendencies are there aswell)

If the American film industry was able to take over from what you describe as a strong European film industry, it doesn't sound like it was so strong in the first place! There was a depression in the states too, not just in Europe.

Anyway, yes, the Americans made the film industry what it is today, including films like this one, film noir, etc. The film industry is certainly worldwide but continues to be dominated by the Americans -- their films, but also their methods and attitudes.

Behind the sneers about America's lack of culture is a great anxiety and fear, for American pop culture and entertainment have basically taken over the world, and people are afraid that their own culture is being submerged. In many countries its a huge deal if a locally made film about local culture becomes a big hit. Oh my god, we still matter!

reply

Ha ha, I think that was the best comment I have ever seen. Then the answers from the americans, ha ha

About the movie I think the first was better then the second.

Best regards from Sweden

reply

Yes and look what centuries of German culture wrought. Delusions about racial superiority that engendered a thirst for world conquest and genocide.

You can keep it.

Saw the movie in my swedish class yesterday. I must say I was somewhat impressed. No, they obviously didn't have any budget, and no, it's not easy to make this kind of movie interesting, but I think they did a decent job.

I'm currently at the age of 17, and wouldn't know squat about icelandic history except for that Edda book of poetry and those active vulcanos. But after seing this film I now feel I know a little bit more. Even if it's 100% fictional, the parallells to actual history are quite a few. The mix between ancient Asa beliefs, in terms of religion, and Christianity, are interesting. The disgusting in-breeding is brought into the plot at the heights of action and not to forget; the icelandic language. Many americans and other non-swedes might think we sound like that - let me tell you right now: we don't! The icelandic language is just about as bizarre to listen to for us as it is for you. =)
The clans are also significative, as is the brutality and roughness which characterized the icelandic people.

Anyhow, the ending is pretty cool, and if you got at all interested by the title/summary plot, I think you should try and see it!

Friendliest regards from Sweden.
