In the defense of the Howling IV, this was the only sequel that was even romotely close to the three novels written by Gary Brandner. It was based off of the first novel. I really enjoyed this one. It was by far better than the Howling III, which was crap!
shareI liked the third one (I don't know why, I just enjoyed it), but I do agree with you about Howling IV relating more to the first book. I read the book a few summers ago and was glad to see that Clive Turner had followed it more than the original movie had.

I've never read the book but I did understand the first movie didn't exactly stay close to it. This movie however is a rip-off of the original Howling (and a poor one at that). Seriously, all the main ideas are the same, the only thing that's different is the setting.

God bless John Sayles for proving that sometimes straying far from the original source is a good thing. His version of the story was better on several levels, and Karyn was somewhat likable...the doc...the quist clan...everything.
Funnything I noticed about the books, Gary's version of the werewolves are very very different from the ones that appear in Howling III...which is a good book IMO and should be adapted...perhaps he saw and was influenced by how Sayles and Joe Dante handled the werewolf? I think so.
I'm saving myself for marriage. And I'll use force if necessary.

Why did you not like the ex-nun character in the book? I thought she served her purpose nicely.
I thought "oh crap" because that's when I realised that it's heading in the same direction as Pt. 4. Plus, I don't think her little game of "hunt the werewolf" was any interesting purpose, and actually going into the details of why she was an ex-nun was completely unnecessary and only there for Brandner's boner.

I totally agree. The moment the character was revealed as a lesbian I cringed. I don't mind lesbians of course, but the whole thing seemed to be so gratuitous.
For those who don't know...
A major female character is revealed to be a lesbian after a hug lingers too long. She feels dirty. The character has no reason in the book to be a lesbian (other than perhaps Brandner cannot believe in platonic female friendship), its basically just THERE. Maybe he did it to push it in people's faces without making an issue of it....but the descriptions did indeed feel pornographic.

There's plenty of things in novels to fill in space, and this is just one of them. If any of you could do a better job I'd love to see it!

In The Howling novels (first two), werewolves are quadropeds. In the first 2 howling movies they are bipeds.

Definately one of the better sequels to this from-poverty series. It had a polished look and a unique take on werewolf transformations. I'll buy it if I can ever find a copy on DVD

I love this flick. The atmosphere is great. I always liked Michael T. Weiss in the "Pretender" and Tony Hamilton in "Mission Impossible". I also used to have a huge crush on Romy Windsor after seeing her in the "House of Usher". My favorite singer Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues sings the theme song "Something Evil".
With all these positives, not to mention the "wolf in sheeps clothing" store owner, how could I not love this flick?

I definitely agree. I also think it's way better than 2 and 3(I haven't seen 6 or 7)but I also kind of liked 5-with its "10 Little Indians" type theme- and,of course,the original(which this is technically a loose remake of, with 4 adhering much closer to the book version) is still the best of the lot.
shareHowling 6 is actually quite entertaining. I believe that it was meant to be a stand alone movie, but tried to cash in on The Howlings name. Howling 7 is bad, not good bad, not bad bad, not even fun bad, just bad cause it's boring and nothing happens. It has numerous random scenes of line dancing and a county music soundtrack.
The Freaks was a little slow at first, but the story is decent and has many likable characters and a good cast.
"Carol Anne, go into the light"!
Yup, it definitely soars above part 3. That was a kangaroo mess of a movie.
