Why no love?

Why no love for this film in the boards? Just caught it on tv and found it an excellent showcase for Kelly McGillis' and Jeff Daniels' talents -- most notably the latter's natural comic timing. His role was a nice surprise. McGillis commands the screen with her fierce tenacity and Mandy Patinkin had a nicely smarmy turn as a US Senator. Jessica Tandy should've been given more to do, but stole all her scenes with McGillis effortlessly.

Nice job all around.

I hadn't heard about this film until I found it in the clearance bins a few years ago, and I finally just got around to watching it. I agree that this is an excellent showcase for fine performances, and it's very well directed. I found the plot rather hard to follow, but after a certain point, I didn't care. It's too bad this film is so obscure.

I agree with the general outline here. The plot stinks but the production, locales and acting are excellent. After a bit of trouble getting my head into the story I got hooked.

I saw it with a friend who has worked at NY City's Grand Central Terminal for most of his career. He said, "Holy sh*t!" when he saw the scenes shot in Grand Central, especially the chase on maintenance walkways high above the concourse. "That's it!" he yelled. No mockup on a set, but the real thing.

Very enjoyable light entertainment.

I know what you mean, but the film respects the intelligence of the viewer to put 2 and 2 together: The events take place in the early years of the Cold War after WW2 in which the US Govt wanted to secure a scientific lead over the Soviets by clandestinely acquiring former-Nazi scientists before the Russians got them. Anyone who gets in the way of accomplishing this, like Emily in the movie (McGillis), can kiss their life goodbye.
