the ending


maybe i missed something. but why was jeff daniels character 'demoted' for lack of a better word. was it because he wasnt supposed to be on the case and he was going against policy??

i loved seeing all the set props and the synchronicity in the movie. there are too many to mention.

You called it. Agent Cochran defied orders to step away from the case and was sent to a dead-end posting. Butte, Montana was one of several field offices (another being Dayton, OH) that J. Edgar Hoover used as "Siberia" assignments for maverick/independent-spirited agents who wouldn't tow the line. No messy firings. They learn their lesson, or they quit, or they spend the rest of their careers on the dullest cases imaginable.
