...Or do something instead of stealing and living like a bum? I know that a war torn country is a hell hole,
but come on! He could have worked for a farmer or someone in exchange for food.

This is Japanese society in the 40s, with strong emphasis on compliance to elders and authority. How is it not true that it is "wrong" to "run away" and steal, within this societal context?
