What movies do you think are sadder?

I'm going with Griffin and Phoenix (1976 original). I dare anyone to get through the last few minutes of that without crying.

Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, The Passion of the Christ, Wastership Down, and The Plague Dogs

You forgot to share your opinion about Watership Down. It's sad to see Jesus die if you can manage to watch the scene.

Plague Dogs was extremely depressing but Watership Down? It had dark moments but the ending was happy IMO /shrug/

...or something far more sinister?

For me Grave of the Fireflies is hands down the saddest movie I have ever seen in my life, no other movie comes close to it.

IMHO Schindler's List, and Saving Private Ryan, while sad movies, at the end leave you with a sentiment of bitter sweet, as opposed to Grave of the Fireflies, that one is COMPLETELY bitter.

American History X is more shocking than sad.

The Passion of the Christ is just disturbing and exploitative.

Requiem for a Dream has a huge shocking value, I do not consider it sad, maybe because none of the characters were very sympathetic.

I haven't seen the other movies, however I will add to the list The Road with Viggo Mortensen, that one is VERY depressing, but Grave of the Fireflies still defeats it.

'When the Wind Blows', and 'Threads'.

Both available on Youtube

"American History X"
"Requiem for a Dream"
"Dancer in the Dark"

To me "Grave of the Fireflies" is more beautiful and poetic than sad (and I loved it), but the ones I just mentioned - those films ripped my heart out, so painful and depressive.

There are plenty of sad/tragic films. I wouldn't attempt to pick which one is saddest, but as this is an animation it's probably not it.

One I can recommend with a similar theme (starvation due to pride):

Sult (1966) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061042/

The character is a grown man and he's alone in the world. And he doesn't have the relief of dying in the end.

A few ideas :
- Leaving Las Vegas
- The Girl Next Door
- The Nameless
- Wong Kar-Wai's The Hand
- Crying out Love in the Center of the Earth (although the drama is better)

In the "rather depressing than sad" department, Children of Men would have been at the top if there hadn't been any boat at the end. But there was, and I was very disappointed.

A Bridge To Terabithia - mainly because we expect there to be tragedy in GOTF due to its setting, its acclaim BUT ABTT starts like a cutesy buddy/bullying movie for kids and throws the biggest curveball in cinematic history

reply

agree. bridge to terabithia is awfully sad

It's a TV movie: Dekalog Jeden by Krzysztof Kieslowski. I had difficulty leaving my seat for 15 minutes after the ending cause it broke my heart.

I was wondering if someone would mention Hachi: A Dog's Tale. I sobbed for the last 30 minutes.

reply

It'll always be Hachi for me. Also The Tale of Princess Kaguya and 12 Years a Slave for example.

Lilja 4-ever - This is a very depressing movie, in tone and mood set very similar to Grave of the Fireflies, only even more harsh and raw.
Watership Down - Mentioned before, I know. But this one left me, and I've seen my fair share of heart-wrenching depressing movies, bawling my eyes out and I still have nightmares about it regularly. (maybe that was because I watched it a few days after my Yorkshire Terrier died who sort of resembled a bunny- he had abnormally large ears and long paws for a Yorkie)
Sophie's Choice - Surprised no-one mentioned this yet. Now, the whole movie seems like a bit of a fun-fest but gradually works up to a moment no mother should ever have to endure...Can't say more or it'll be a spoiler but watch that and be surprised.
La Vita é Bella - Sadder than Grave of the Fireflies? I don't know. But again, that ending left even my fiancee crying like a little girl. And my fiancee is Tony Soprano 2.0, imagine what it did to me.
