Why no DVD???

Why is this Mike Leigh classic not available on DVD? I can understand with some of his more obscure early works, but this is one of his masterpieces! Worthwhile for the use of the name "Araminta DeWinter" alone ;-)

someone please make a post and put this on criterion collection

Absolutely brilliant news: This film is now available from an Australian film distributor Hopscotchfilms - see www.hopscotchfilms.com.au. I first saw this film in 1989 in the West End of London. I am sure that Mike Leigh was actually at the viewing, at least a bloke that looked like him. Anyhow, I have been chasing a DVD copy of this marvellous film for eons. I am chuffed to the power of ten.

Blimey! On dvd? I'd given up hope. Having said that, it costs about £1000 pounds to get the Criterion edition of 'Naked'. (Ok, I'm exaggerating, but you get the point). I guess I'll have to pay god knows how much for postage on this little gem too, right? It's a pain, not least because I'm stuck here half-broke, and with drivel like 'Vera Lake' to contend with.

If you lot run out of people to get Xmas prezzies for, keep me in mind. Cheers.

*Incidentally, a note to fellow U.K. citizens - have you seen the embarassment of riches available to our brothers and sisters in the U.S.A.? And the embarassingly prohibitive costs?!

I'm afraid this gem of a movie has gotten lost in the transition from VHS to DVD but hope that it won't be forgotten forever. With so many of Leigh's pre theatrical films ("Nuts in May," etc.) now available what is to stop this one (not to mention "Life is Sweet") from seeing a US DVD release? Sounds like a job for Criterion.

It has been released on DVD - no extras and no remastering but still OK. See my earlier message for details.

Is this a region 1 DVD?

reply

No region 4, I think, i.e. Australia.

I'm sure you're all aware already but just to point out it is now available on DVD. Everything will be, eventually.

ive got the mike leigh box set which has i think all of his films up till happy go lucky, its a wonderful set. saw naked last night which was extraordinary and just watched this which i quite liked, especially ruth sheen but the characters weren't quite as interesting as the likes of life is sweet and secrets and lies, both masterpieces
