Nightmare On Elm Street 3; Dream Warriors

Am I the only one who was reminded of Dream Warriors when I saw this film? Set in a pyschiatric hospital, but with access to another plane of existence. Even the two female leads looked a bit like Nancy and Kristen.

They're similar, but I prefer Hellraiser II because of the atmosphere and surrealism. The ANOES series is surreal, but not like Hellraiser.

I wasn't meaning it as a slur on the quality of either film. I only watched Hellbound for the first time this week, and noticed a similarity.

Both films were good in their own way.

One thing I've noticed is in general, a lot of horror/thriller movies have a character end up institutionalized in the sequel(often the first sequel but not always). Child's Play 2 had the mother in an asylum and Andy in foster care, Terminator 2 had Sarah institutionalized and John also in foster care, Laurie Strode was in a mental hospital in Halloween Resurrection after the events of H20. The usual formula goes 1. Main character has a run in with a monster/demon/robot assassin from the future 2. Tries to explain all the death and destruction to the authorities 3. Authorities call the men in white coats.

Indeed -- although it's been many years since I saw Dream Warriors I was reminded of it while watching HRII tonight... to the point of wondering if one drew inspiration from the other.

Yes definitely. Kirsty is Nancy, Kyle is Dr. Gordon, Tiffany is Kristen, Julia has some great one-liners like Freddy and once Channard becomes a Cenobite he becomes the Freddy character. Both fantastic films.

I thought I was the only one who noticed the similarities but I'm glad to see I'm not. Both are wonderful sequels.

reply

Yeah, I have always thought this.

I noticed the similarities immediately when watching Hellraiser 2 for the first time tonight in many years.
