Plot hole?

Plot hole or was something edited out of Hellraiser's first film? At the end of the movie when frank betrays Julia, she dies in the corner of the stairway landing... but later during the final climax her corpse is on the bed clinging to the puzzle box, and Kristie states in part 2, Julie died on the mattress, which is why she can come back... but we never see her get to the mattress or die there, so I'm wondering if Julia getting to the mattress was edited out of the final cut of the film?

Having Julia die on the mattress holding the box was a last minute idea, as a hook for a sequel, which is probably why it doesn't make a lot of sense.

The best explanation I can think of is she didn't die right after Frank stabbed and drained her, and used the last of her strength to drag herself to the bed and solve the box. As for why she would solve it, probably to get back at Frank, believing she could summon the cenobites and have them take Frank back to Hell. Little did she know they were already on Earth and looking for Frank, so all she succeeded in was getting her face ripped off and being taken to Hell along with Frank.

That does seem reasonable

In the novella that Hellraiser was based on, Kirsty also found Julia dead, mutilated, and clutching the box. So it was not exactly last minute for the movie, but certainly seemed to come out of nowhere in both cases.

Kirsty found Julia's still-speaking head in the lap of the Engineer who was wearing Julia's wedding dress. I don't think there was any mention of either of them holding the box at that point.

You're right about the box. I remembered it wrong. But the brutal and bizarre manner of her "death" in the book still makes me think that the Cenobites taking Julia back home with them was intended. She may not have opened the box, but she was an accomplice to Frank's escape. The Cenobites would not have taken kindly to that.

You're probably right. It does show that the cenobites or the Engineer got to her even after Frank betrayed her. Also, when the Engineer gives Kirsty the box after she exits the house, she sees Frank's and Julia's faces reflecting on the faces of the box but can't find Rory's, which seems to indicate that the former two were taken to the cenobites' realm while the latter is in some other realm/afterlife.
