The new one is better

Sorry to all of you who love the classic. It's ok but I love the new one so much better. I like it more I think because it's a musical and I really like those. Plus, the acting is fabulous. This one just isn't really that interesting in my opinion. It's a little odd.

I agree. I'm watching this one now and it's a little bit weird and dull. I like the new one so much more. But it could be that I'm a fan of musicals too.

reply

So, the old one wasn't a musical? I thought the network might have just cut the songs for time. The new one is a gazillion times better.

reply

i know, right now it's a commercial on ABC family for the old one. I am so disappointed! I thought it was a musical. Without the music, it's just weird and kinda boring...

reply

Definitely

There's no songs. I mean they mentioned all of the song titles but without the songs it's just the movie portion of the new version.

The new version has the movie portion and the musical portion.

Totally agree. I'm watching it right now and... well, the acting is kinda bad... : | And, it kinda isn't the same without the songs. I was all excited for it, but now, well... I miss the new movie version.

I guess that's why they said that the '07 version was based on the broadway show, not the original movie... Musicals rock.

You do realize though that had there not been this movie there would have been no musical stage version and then a film adaptation of that for you to be fawning over, right?

Who cares, it still sucks without the music.

Of course that's my opinion.

I knew that the original wasn't a musical, but I was still really looking forward to watching it when I found out it was on TV. However, I was extremely disappointed by the original. I have continuously heard it described as being a witty satire, but I didn't find it to be particularly funny for the most part. The only part that I was laughing really hard at was when the shrink was trying to "cure" Penny of her 'black affixiation', or whatever it was lol. I also didn't really like how the characters were developed; Link and Tracy's relationship seemed to be very sudden and I didn't really understand how it came about. I understand that the version I saw was on ABC Family, and thus some content may have been cut out, but honestly I don't think it made much difference and I did not find the original to be nearly as enjoyable as I had been led to believe.
As for the new version, I found the songs to be very entertaining (even though I wouldn't consider myself to be a musical lover) and I really liked the subtle changes they had made to the storyline, which improved it from the original (IMHO, of course) and made the flow of the movie a lot smoother. I also really enjoyed the acting in this movie, while I found those in the first one to be rather forgettable.

You've got to be kidding?!?! None of you knew that the old one wasn't a musical and was just a regular movie instead? That's kind of funny really, and a little sad as well. Anyhow, I personally disagree with virtually all of your opinions about this recent musical adaptation of the original, I far prefer Waters hilarious '88 version of it better myself

I guess perception is everything & obviously many people have their own perceptions & feelings about both versions, because I found nothing hilarious about the '88 version - I just thought it was nasty & the worst acting I've ever seen! LOL...but that's JMO which is shared by many...just as there are many that share your opinion of the original being good. : )

I saw the remake on Friday and the original yesterday. I was expecting the original to be a musical at first, I mean a Broadway musical was made after it, and the rmeake was amusical, but learned it wasn't. Anyways, I LOVED the remake, and thought the original would be great as well, after all, it has Ricki Lake! haha! However, I was a bit disapointed, the original is a kinda trashy campy 80s flick, not bad, it's quite good. But I liked the remake better... A lot better! Also I thought the actres that played Prudy Pingelton in the remake looked exactly *beep* Prudy Pingelton in the original!

Also, the remake made me forget about everything else and just get into the movie, the original however did not.

The 2007 version put a permanent smile on my face, I loved it entirely and the story actually made sense. The old version isnt bad but everything is crammed (it seems as if they wanted to add way too many things). The actors weren't all that great compared to the ones we have in the new movie.

reply

It's SUPPOSED to be odd. It's a John Waters film. What else would you expect? There were some scenes in that movie that were so ridiculous, I couldn't stop laughing.

I didn't laugh once.

The '88 and '07 version? No comparison. They're two totally different films-- however, I definitely prefer the '88 version for various reasons. The '07 version is great (I'm looking forward to the DVD), and everyone has to realize that they're totally different films if they've seen the '07 version and rent the '88 version on a whim thinking Tracy'll wake up singing "Good Morning Baltimore" and The Corny Collins Show will begin with a rendition of "The Nicest Kids in Town." They're both great-- two different films-- the original is the best; I don't really consider the '07 film as a remake as it takes off more from the play.

I think the old one is very boring and the acting is bad. And when I say that, I'm not comparing it to the new one. I started to watch it, realized it wasn't a musical, and decided to give it another chace.... It didn't work for me. I stopped watching it less that halfway through because I was falling asleep. It was just..... not very good.

But I love the new one!!!

reply

I love the the old movie way more then 07 movie . I like it for the reasons that some of u say u dislike it, I like the feel that was werid and kind bad. It one of those movies that is bad that it kind of good. As for the new one the song were not that great with the exspation of the last one. Also it just too cute and sweet for my teast.Pluse I don't like Zac Efron.Truth be told maybe I'm just to old and Don't get the goodness of the new one.

reply

teast.Pluse

Or maybe you dropped out of school?

BTW you don't have to like Zac Efron to enjoy the film. I like the new one for the main reason that it is a musical. I don't care about "Oh it's the original, blah, blah, blah"

I like it just because it's a musical.

In this one you get comedy and music. In the original you fall asleep.

I mean it wasn't funny and it didn't have good music.

I think most of you like it because it was "Made in 80's" and you 1980er's have to represent, don't cha?

the scene where some woman socked tracy's bf in the knees and he was acting like he was some kind of paraplegic(sp?). then the one where penny pingleton's mom was acting all eratic. I dont know. the whole movie was just ridiculous but in a good way.

TOTALLY. ARE THESE PEOPLE ON HERE IDIOTS OR WHAT? They obviously have not grasped the basic concept of the original AT ALL. Ignorants - GO OUT AND WATCH SOME MORE FILMS AND STOP BEING SO SPOONFED WITH EVERYTHING *beep* MODERN AND COMMERCIAL.

reply

Omg! i can't believe some of you people "i thought they cut out the songs" " it's kinda boring" you can't compare the musical to the original and BEST or definitely not compare Divine to John Travolta, there is only one Edna and that is Divine. And no doubt most of you have never even heard of John Waters or Divine before.

I love all of John Waters movies but i have to agree with the people here that the new hairspray is a bit better and a little less dull at times!the numbers really liven it up!but i love the old one aswell but not as much!i think john travolta plays a much better edna but i still love divine.i also prefer michelle pfeiffer's velma cause shes that little bit more evil and actually has a career!where was mr von tussle though velma did say he suffocated accidentally!im not sure about nikki blonsky or amanda bynes as tracey and penny!love new prudy pingleton!zac efron is flawless(even though i still bear a grudge against the evil that is high school musical)(what happened to michael st gerard!)love queen latifah as maybelle!but i still prefer ruth brown(R.I.P)!where is mink stoles character tammy!i loved that character!overall i much preferred this livelier new Hairspray!

I grew up on the John Waters movie. While I liked the new one the 80's one has more sentimental value. The original is the classic one and that won't change. There was something more magical about the original Penny character. Maybe it had to do with the additional pigtails but I found the new one sorely lacking.

reply

Most people say they found the original very dull at times and the musical version very entertaining. However, I have to say the exact opposite. The original goes by at a steady pace for me where the musical is dragged out WAY TOO MUCH for my tastes. The songs are overly long and unlike most musicals, they don't advance the plot much at all. They just feel like they are there for the sake of calling it a musical.

Also, the musical version is way too cliche for my tastes where the fun of the original is the quirky humor thrown into it. Also, I think most people are mistaking over the top acting (a John Waters preference for his films) for bad acting in the original. I thought no one in the original had bad acting at all, it was just over the top at times. That's just how a John Waters film is.

I love all of John Waters movies. I used to watch the original Hairspray over and over again when I was a kid. The strange tone and the kitsch humor just really appealed to my sense of humour. The new version made me feel absolutely sick though! It was like they took the original and cleaned it up so much that there is little unique charm left. Musicals grate on my nerves so a big star version of one of my favourite childhood films is an abomination to me. It makes me sad to think that when people hear 'Hairspary' now they only think of Travolta in a fat suit and not the campy and witty original.

I'm a fan of both films. I think I'll always prefer the original just because it was the original, but I still like the new one. The first one is HILARIOUS in a way that the new one just isn't. The new one is much cheesier and more "disneyfied hollywood." I also LOVE Tracey's character in the original one so much more than in the new one. She's so awesome in the original. Outspoken, and really proud of being a "big" girl. In the newer one she is sweet of course, but a totally different character.

THANK you. The adaptation is for SQUARES. It's so squeaky clean and shiny and suburban -- it may be the most disturbing thing i have ever seen attached to John Waters' name. I did only throw up once, though. May have been the withdrawals, though.

reply

The original was brilliant, poignant and had that John Waters magic.
The remake was terrible in my opinion. Hairspray, a story about racial turbulence, disobedience and overcoming odds was *heavily* sanitized and remade as an insipid, sugary film with no teeth and novelty actors. The original was far better. It's the only one as far as I'm concerned.

I'm sorry but the new version is absolute rubbish, I couldn't even finish watching it. The music was awful, the characters were dull.
I'll stick with the original thank-you very much.
