Well if its films with a 50's/60's music theme running through them how about......
1983's Baby It's You (one of my favourite films actually) starring Rosanna Arquette (playing a 60's straight laced high school girl to Vincent Spano's streetwise character known as "The Sheikh")
Or how about Tom Hank's 1996 film "That Thing You Do" following the rise & fall of a fictitious 1964 pop group.
1991's doo-wop film "The Five Heartbeats" also fits the bill as well as the very recent film "Dreamgirls" too but I have to confess that I have not actually seen this last film-Yet!
Or lastly why not try the 1996 little gem "Grace of my Heart" starring Illeana Douglas as a singer/songwriter whose best songs always seem to get given to other performers (the film is very loosely based on the life of Carole King).
These are some of my favourites to keep you going anyway-Enjoy!

One of the all time best....American Graffiti. The greatest 50's movie ever made!

Down with Love for sure

I agree, American Grafitti is great (and the original) but it's set in 1962, not "The 50's"

reply

It's about early 1960's greaser gangs in New York.

Cheers!

Deuces Wild (it's not the greatest movie ever, but if you like films based in the 50s/60s you'll really like it)

The Shag ( a very cool movie about a group of girls and their vacation)

A Bronx Tale ( a gangster film, but its based in the 1960s and the soundtrack and plot are great)

The In Crowd(1988) (cool movie about an American Bandstand-like show and the kids who dance on it- wonderful soundtrack)

The first three Gidget movies (gidget is a surfer girl)

The Beach Party movies (starring Frankie and Annette and other early 60s teen stars)

Dirty Dancing

Peggy Sue Got Married (At her high school reunion Peggy Sue faints and goes back in time to when she was a teenager in the 1960s- cool movie)

I'll try to think of some more

Mischief
My American Cousin
Stand By Me
Shag: The Movie

These along with Cry Baby, Hairspray, Grease, and American Graffiti are my favorite modern films that take place in the 50's and 60's. My American Cousin is rather hard to find, but the movie is an absolute delight!

Well this is kinda a cheat, but Rebel without a cause. Its based in the 50s, well because it was filmed in the 50's. So i guess it gets that 50's feel honestly. Great movie as well.

The beginning of Female Trouble took place in the 60's.

I love:
American Graffitti
Diner
Peggy Sue Got Married

Really hard to believe it took that long for someone to mention Diner as one of the movies about that general era. It was the film that put Barry Levinson on the map and was also about Baltimore during that period. Levinson also did Avalon, Liberty Heights, and Tinmen - all films about Baltimore during the 50s and 60s.
