He said that beating Mayol record (400 ft) is dangerous for human body. I checked Wikipedia and found out that world record in their discipline is 702 feet. You can watch attempt on youtube. How can you explain this?

Because the movie was made in 1988. At one time, they thought it was impossible for a human to run a sub 4 minute mile. Once the record fell, it became easier to beat.

There are lots of different categories of free diving. The one which is closest to what we see in the movie I think is called CWT – Constant weight apnea. In this division the current world record holder (as of 2013) is a Russian, who holds a record of just under 420 feet, which is more in line with what we see in this 1988 film.🐭
