I've been never the same after this movie. Its beauty and sensibility are simply amazing!!

reply

AMEN

This movie sucks. How could you even like it?

reply

Ya i agree, I absolutely hated this movie. It did have some beautiful shots, but there were too many things in the way of this movie being even remotely enjoyable. I hate these 80's high-concept films. Everytime Jean-Marc Barr was on screen I winced in pain. This movie would have been a lot better if that dolphin would have attacked him and gnawed that stuped smile off his face.

pls go shoot urself tnx.

Apart from the excellent shots which only a person who has been under the sea at least once can appreciate, the movie gives the audience a chance to think about life and what is worth for each individual. Also Jacques Mayol was one of the greatest divers ever who reached the stunning 100 metres under water! His ability to keep long under water was due to his physicality that he practiced through yoga and additionally the special bond he had with dolphins proves once more how much alike our brains are.
It is sad to see at the end that he chooses to leave behind the human life and go beyond in the sea, where the water is no longer blue.I wish icould join him.

By the way zoooperman, i wonder what u look like!?

reply

"zoooperman i wonder what you look like?" What are you picking me up? I said i winced in pain b/c he always has that stupid look on his face. I cannot believe you liked this garbage! I do scuba-dive and love the ocean, but this film was WAY too sappy for me.

i know im quoting another user from the big blue boards, but i guess shes right about a lot of people. Most didnt like this film because there wasn't enough buildings being blown up, cheesy one liners or sexy girls in teeny weeny skirt prancing around their hot cars. Please learn how to appreciate a masterpiece like the big blue, if not then you are certainly welcome to go back to those trash you call films.

90% of shmuckler's posts contains the word "suck"... why are you wasting your time here? The world of professional film critisism awaits you. Your rapier wit is going to waste on this website.

reply

I agree.
It just stays within you, mesmerizing.
Makes you wanna cry and smile at the same time. Magical.

This is one of the best movies ever made. I just love the works of Luc Besson and this is one of his absolutely best ones.

It is very different from all that crappy hollywood action that is produced today. I mean, hollywood haven't come up with a new concept since... well.. I don't know when but it is a very long time ago :D

reply

I told my friends after seeing this that I thought it was the best movie ever made and they didn't believe me.

I can understand why others might not love it quite as much as I do, but as a movie it contains so many amazing moments, so many inspiring ideas that I don't think have ever been expressed quite as beautifully, before or since.

Besson has done quite a few great films in the last decade and a half(Le Femme Nikita, Fifth Element, etc), but Big Blue remains my favorite.

I have never heard of this film! It does sound kind of poufy though!

reply

You really should watch it, it is great one of my all time favorites. Watch it before you make assumptions about it.

reply

My wife made me watch it b/c she thought she remembered it being good. She remembered incorrectly.
Long, stupid, drawn out scenes that made me long for the power to go out...if you have never seen this movie, save yourself some aggrevation and don't watch it.

reply

No, you are missing the point. Don't think of this film as plots and characters and photography, think of it as a beautiful lesson in escapism.

reply

Besson makes good looking films that are utterly without substance and this is another. OK, the sea looks great and some of the stuff with Jean Reno in the cinquecento is amusing, but in the end this is vapid pointless tosh. The bits with Rosanna Arquette in particular are just embarrassing.

If you like this, what other films do you like?

I agree it looked nice, but that's all. I don't actually remember the music.

But if you like this, what other films do you like?

reply

Like an Athena poster animated.

Absolutly a great film First watched it in 89, loved the music, rented it again in 93 recorded the song playing during the credits to an audio tape, rented it again last week, The Song is Different! What's up with that? If anyone knows where to find ALL the music for this film please tell me.

reply

The American version and the Director's Cut feature different soundtracks. The one you rented in 93 was the American version (since the Director's Cut was not released yet). The Director's Cut features the soundtrack from the European version. This music by Eric Serra is actually the original soundtrack. When the American adaptation was made in the early ninties, it was rescored with music by Bill Conti (this is likely the music you recorded years ago). This version is increasingly harder to find, as it is out of print.

reply

The Big Blue soundtrack is by Eric Serra and is available on CD. Hope this helps. And yes the end song is different to this in the movie, i don't know why.

reply

I am pretty sure i bought the soundtrack years ago - so it must exist. look for it on itunes or Amazon.

reply

You could easily find the BO. Everyone I know has it as here it is considered as a generational cult movie. BTW, make sure you get the european BO by Eric Serra.

And yes it is also my all-time favourite. I mean if there had to be one left. But that's probably because my childhood ressembles very much to the main characters has had.

This movie also has done a great deal for ecology.

My friend recommended this movie...It's one thing to mix genres cleverly in a movie (see Punch Drunk Love) but it's another to make a confused mess of a film (like this).

Over long, badly acted (Rosanna Arquette mainly) and a complete pointless story to be told.

Anyone who thinks this is the best movie ever is as crazy as the dolphin lovin' Jacques Mayol.

reply

I loved it!

It may not be the best ever, but it's in my top 5!

Luc Besson is just excelent, this one and Leon are fabulous movies.

reply

My thoughts exactly. Jean Reno is one of my all-time favourites.

reply

This is a freaking awesome movie. You kind of get time to reflect on the film during the watching, not having too much of a plot to keep up with. Plus Rosanna Arquette, despite horrible 80s hair, is really freaking hot.

reply

this is a terrible film

reply

I love it. It's the reason I started freediving. I can see why others don't like it though. It's not a great movie in the "great movie" sense of the phrase but for me it just struck a cord.

reply

One of my all time favorite movies! Very strange it hasn't come up on the top 250 yet... Maybe if Enzo had a speargun and shot a couple of "Bad guys" and some car chases and explosions? :-)
