I was just looking that up myself--it's J.B. White, in the role of Jimbo--takes a bit of looking up, since the film is so little remembered these days. There's not even a Wikipedia article on it.
It's the best and truest rendition of the song I've ever heard, and believe me, I've heard many. He really cuts to the heart of it. Not a drop of mawkish sentimentality to be found there. The Best Song indeed.
That is an amazing version of that song, isn't it? Normally that tune makes me cringe, but by the end of it, I was about to join Virginia Madsen's character in tears. That was five bucks well spent!
