An Underrated Film

This film has been in the back of my memory ever since I saw it on television years ago, and was frustrated when I wanted to see it again and couldn't find a copy - probably because I saw it as 'The Dead Can't Lie.'

Who could forget the haunting atmosphere and the line that goes something like, 'You remind me of Lillian Gish'?

It's on Ebay and Amazon, as "Gotham".
The only problem for anyone outside the USA, it's a region 1 DVD.
To watch it I had to hack my DVD player. This is quite easy, and most players have instructions online to do this.

"It tickles!"

I agree it is an underated film. Virginia Madsen is a beautiful ghosts who haunts the minds of the viewers since she lost her life. I wrote about this film on the IMBD message board for Ghost - another film I really love.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I watched it yesterday and enjoyed it very much. I came here to vote and was really surprised to see the low rating. Anyway I voted 8. I was even thinking about 9.

I checked the details of the voting here on imdb and found out females aged 18-29 hated it! They voted 3.3. I guess they dislike Virginia Madsen's character.

I think females 18-29 are just jealous!

Where did this film originally air, anyway? On HBO or Showtime?

reply

It was on Showtime. That's where I first saw it.

reply

Thanks. This looks more like a Showtime movie than an HBO film.

I saw this film shortly after it came out on video and when our video store was going out of business, this was one of the first VHS films I ran to buy. I think of it often, even after 20+ years and still believe it was one of Tommy Lee Jones best films. If young women don't like it, they need to watch it again when they grow up. Virginia Madson was fantastic, as was the storyline. I can watch it again and again and never be bored. It's a definite must see, if you can find it, get it.

I also found this in the video store clearance, for 99 cents as I recall. It's well worth seeking out, and I wish Virginia Madsen and Tommy Lee Jones would work together again.

Young girls have the weight of the world on their shoulders, so I won't add fuel to the fire, but when they grow up, they're going to have to explain what they saw in Justin Bieber and "Twilight" and what they didn't see in this film.

In the UK, I think it got a cinema release and was titled, 'The dead can't lie.'

Its that man again!!
