How Does It End? PLEASE HELP!

Hello. I recorded "Dead Can't Lie" which was shown in the TV, and sat comfortably to watch it during the next day. However, I got an ugly surprise when I realized that due to lots of interfering commercials, the movie ended much later than the time I had programmed, and consequently I was unable to see the ending.

I will appreciate if someone would be so kind as to tell me what happens. I have seen until the point when Tommy Lee Jones goes to an Orthodox priest asking him whether it is true that dead don't lie, and the priest replies that in fact they always do. What happens next? Is Madsen really dead or not? And how does it all end?

Thanks a lot,

J

I can't tell you if Madsen is really dead or not; but I can tell you that Tommy Lee Jones is REALLY Naked! And for an old girl like me, that is quite a treat!!

Is Rachel really dead? It seems pretty certain she must be - it's the only explanation when you consider all the facts\

thats the million $ question; is she or isnt she, I cant help but wonder if the whole thing is a sham just to mess with eddie's head. I'd really like to know what others think...

SPOILERS FOLLOW (obviously).

Eddie has had enough of the situation, so he tells both Rachel & Charlie that he has what each of them want, and tells them to come to his office.

Rachel arrives first, Eddie tells her if she will just forget about the jewels, he will follow her to wherever she wants to go, even if that's death.
But she's too obsessed in the jewels, and really not interested in him, so Eddie gives her the box of fake jewels that Charlie gave him. Right away she sees they are fake. At that moment Charlie arrives with the box of real jewels (or so he thinks).

Then Eddie tells them he switched boxes earlier when Charlie had asked him to look after them. He guessed correctly that Charlie wouldn't check the box before putting it back in the bank safe. Eddie then reveals he gave the real jewels to the preist for the church.

He then leaves them to it, telling Charlie he's keeping the $10000 Charlie paid him earlier.
Eddie then joins up with Debbie & Tim, and they all head off to the tropics.

Rachel & Charlie don't believe Eddie, and rip open the box, only to find a load of really cheap plastic junk jewery (probably the funniest scene of the movie).

The movie ends with Charlie still at the bar, finishing his story to the barman, as Rachel walks in, sits down next to Charlie, and asks for her jewels :-) The end.

After meeting up with the Russian Orthodox priest, to whom Eddie entrusted the real jewels, he gets a message from Rachel to meet her at Charlie's boat, and she is dressed in elegance, saying the dress cost more than Eddie would make in a year. She explains the night she died her party guests on the boat merely watched as she drowned. The scene ends with her disappearing into the murky waters of the river, drowning again.

The irony is that the jewels will become embedded in a chalice that will be housed in a church. The church is consecrated ground, and the ghost will never be able to get at them ever again.

Whoops, how could I forget that scene.

Just stopped by this board and wanted to add:

I found the ending disturbingly literal for a ghost story. There was nothing magical, mystical or mysterious about it. Madsen's character might as well have been a living, breathing stalker rather than a ghost, because that's how she acted and that's how the movie treated her. It made the whole supernatural aspect of the film sort of trivial, I thought.

it makes no sense. what a stupid movie. it was nice to see tommy lee jones playing a new york detective though. I hate all the texas characters he plays over and over.

Yes, I have to agree that the ending was a bit disappointing. This is a well acted, very atmospheric film that turns into a gimmicky drama about a swindle. It's still worth watching though, especially for the lovely Virginia Madsen.

reply

Yeah the ending was not only disappointing it felt out of place and at odds with the rest of the story. Clearly they didnt know how to end the story and flubbed it. I thought it was all gonna end up being a con and that she was really alive, which would have been predictable, yet acceptable. But what they came up with was really a bad way to end it. Could have been an 8 but a really unsatisfying ending makes it more like a 6.5.

There is NO Gene for the Human Spirit.

reply

Indeed. I gave it a 6, though it started out a lot stronger and should have been better considering the talent involved.
