The musical score is just horrible

Awful. And to think it came from the great Maurice Jarre makes it even worse. Saw it only once in the theater upon theatrical release now many years ago, but never forgot how the score took me out of the film.

It betrays the drama of the film, undermining what is onscreen rather than deepening it as it should do. This very good film could have been even better with John Barry at the helm.

I was just going to start up a new topic with the same heading. The music sounded so cheap!!! That awful artificial organlike sound that was used so often in "dramatic" places just ruined these moments. I wonder why they did...

reply

Yes, the music in this film was terrible.

Sorry but in this film (and I believe Jarre used it in Fatal Attraction as well) that instrument sounds like a cheap mid-80s synthesizer. Maybe in other contexts it has a lovely sound but not the way it's used in this movie. Plus the score itself is terrible.

reply

I totally disagree. I think Jarre did a good job. The main theme reminds me of the playfulness and lust for life of those magnificent animals. I have to reach for the kleenex box every time I watch the final scene, with Sembagare moving the stones so that Dian's and Digit's souls can be reunited. The music is wonderful for this scene.

Some of the music, particularly in the middle of the movie, was awful. It felt so out of place in some scenes it makes you wonder what the director and editor were thinking.

reply

Well, he was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe for it anyway. I didn't mind it at all, but saw it when it came out, maybe it would bug me now.

reply

I think the musical score is beautiful - one of Jarre's best. And he got an Oscar nomination for it.

I agree with your entire post, a-bollinger. Especially about the final scene, that one makes me weep every time. The thought of animal lovers being with their beloved animals again...especially Digit & Dian.

80ies scores were terrible for the most part. Thank the Gods the keyboard crap went out of style and real orchestras are back in. Just watch Romancing the Stone and tear your ears out.

'80s scores were some of the best of any decade so far.

I will say that film scores have more 'varied' instruments used nowadays, but they were still incredible.
They actually tried to fit in with the theme of the movie.

One of my favourite Jarre scores. Can't agree with OP at all. Given the GG win and Oscar nomination I say: *beep*

reply

I completely agree! The music makes itself noticeable in a bad way, not enhancing the movie, but sounding like cheap soap opera climax music. Terrible!! This film deserves better, and Mr. Jarre can do much better.
